BF2042 Review

My opinion of the state of Battlefield 2042, this by no means that anything I say is fact/fiction but an opinion entirely about everything that is going on with the state of this game and gaming in general.

When it comes to the current state of gaming in general, I can say that I understand where a lot of the hate for the game are coming from, but this in no means warrants absolutely bashing every release into the ground because your expectations are not met 100%. No matter the game/genre a substantial portion of the “fan base” will hate on a game above anything else like it would be a part of their personality. This by no means say that I would be defending Battlefield with everything that they would have decided to do up to this point for the launch. With that let me get into the things that I would find to be wrong with the game up to this point.

  • The server access was at first extremely short coming in the beginning, persistence data error and disconnecting from servers is frustrating but understandable for the launch of a game when most game companies vastly underestimate how much traffic they will receive on the first days. Dice seems to have put a good effort into fixing these problems so we should not really fault them for the fact these issues have plagued most major multiplayer game releases in the past/present.
  • Disabling XP and lowering XP for Portal and Solo/Co-op on the other hand can be very questionable for a choice, I get that they want people to want to come back and play the game past the first week but if the individual decides to blow through the ranks at the rate they want, does it matter/affect anyone in general that they do? I know that one of the big problems was XP farming servers on Portal but how does Solo/Co-op compare in the first place to Portal, you still have to play the game against the bots in AOW to get the unlocks but fully disabling weapon/vehicle unlocks but keeping reduced XP for that mode was an extremely poor decision. I know a lot of people (my friends included who have never played a Battlefield game in their lives should have the ability to progress fully in Solo/Co-op so they can learn the game at their own rate separate to dealing with Vehicle/Explosive/Camper spam on the daily to unlock one optic they might want down the line or learning a vehicle more advanced) my guess is that the Battlefield team understands that the content is pretty lack luster to previous titles such as Battlefield 4 comparatively, maybe the Battlefield team should introduce better cosmetics/card items to entice players to work toward something other than XP/Progression related stuff.
  • Lastly game optimization for the game on PC for the more enthusiasts of us, I play on a machine that has a Ryzen 7 5800x, RTX 3080TI Founders, and 32GB DDR4 Ram 3666mhz and running the game at Ultra, 4k, RTX on, with Performance DLSS I get a solid 60 fps but I dip constantly dip below 20 in some cases with those settings and after a while DirectX will crash out and run out of resources from that. However, turning off RTX my FPS more than doubled (everything still left at 4k and Ultra and can even turn DLSS off entirely without it affecting FPS at all) and have not had a single stutter or crash upon this change. The team needs to check that optimization is entirely in the game as something does not seem right with that huge amount of change as other RTX games might lose 15-20 FPS with RTX on rather than half and crashing the game out from running the card so heavily.
  • Tacking on this multiple smaller issues, numerous different bugs related to UI customization not saving, balancing of some of the vehicles such as the Russian attack heli having two 30mm cannons for driver and gunner and the US side having only the gunner seat 30mm, hitting headshots on people with a sniper who have armor on not dying from said headshot (have not tried AP rounds in this circumstance or anything other than standard).

Now with the griping out of the way about the problems that plague this game, some of the things that I find enjoyable about the game (if you cannot find the good things in the world with the bad then you should detox and leave the computer for a moment and go touch grass or something)

  • The game is a lot of fun to play, comparative to BF4, I have had so many Battlefield moments in this game already. I have sniped multiple helicopter pilots out of their vehicles at this point so early in the game life cycle, I have used Mackay to grapple into the air and hit multiple trick shots be it using the rocket launcher on vehicles or wiping entire squads.
  • The weapon attachment in game is immensely helpful to someone who can utilize a weapon for any situation, being able to tack a suppressor onto a weapon before flanking is a god send and something I could have only dreamed about when I use to play BF4
  • Battlefield Portal brings back a semi remastered version of some of the greatest multiplayer games ever released up to this point, you can essentially get old school dev weapons in BF3 with the customization they offer in Portal which is insane and something I have always wanted with the customization in BF3.
  • I like the customization they offer for cosmetics allowing us to mix and match uniforms and helmets, this allows more freedom to express how you feel with that character

Those are some of the different opinions I share about the current state of the game, as I said in the beginning these are just some of the many opinions that I share about this potentially great game. Please share your opinions about the game in the comments below

Thanks!

When a smg can out perform assualt rifles at distance then the game is broken badly.

For the years in development it's a shambles.

Did they not play test it to save money to let us the players find the bugs for them for free.

For the play testers if any who played this your in the wrong job.

Rubberbanding Kicked from server still happening why? have they not done a online game before!!

The sound is terrible you cannot hear a tank etc come up behind you. Footsteps broken either wrong direction or sound close when far away.

The UI is rubbish and saw a post on reddit someone fixed everything in a day will take dice 2yrs i expect.

But before they really fix it they will drop it because they want to make another Bugfield game.

Not sure how anyone can defend this game at all even the graphics look worse no destruction planes just bounce of building.

Hovercraft  climb and jump building to building.

The game is 1yr away from being any good only way to save it is they need to add more maps to portal mode.

So much wrong with game hopefully i get my refund.

Are you new to FPS multiplayer gun balance? Ill defend the game from the "this is not battlefield elitists", because at its core its battlefield and solid. But until we see some real change in the game industry as a whole, the rushing unpolished products its kinda of the normal thing right now unfortunately.  However I see the massive potential the game has and I haven't binged a game like this since maybe BF4(Which was an even worse launch).
