Can you upgrade weapons in solo/coop BF2042
I purchased the early access for BF 2042 and my progress for kills was being counted during solo/coop play and then it seems to have stopped out of nowhere. Is this an issue others are having?

Yes, they disabled almost all the unlocks and masteries progress in the solo/co-op temporarily. How long the "temporarily" will exactly be is a thing nobody knows.
About picking a side in the solo/co-op - it depends on the specialist selected before the start of the match. For example, Boris will always start for RU, Maria Falck for US and so on. Not very obvious, but it works (I am not sure about playing as a defender, though). You can change the specialist to your preferred one once the match is loaded, on the deployment map. 😉
