Compatibility between Xbox One and Xbox series X if there is no Smart delivery.

Hello Everyone, hopefully, you are happy and having a fun day.

I am interested and cannot wait for Battlefield 2042 however, I am struggling to understand the compatibility between Xbox One x and Xbox Series X due to this game not supporting smart delivery for Xbox. At this time I am currently an Xbox One x player and would love to play this on Xbox One and Xbox Series X. What is the compatibility like from playing this game on Xbox One then moving over to Xbox Series X?

Would anyone know the answer? As I cannot find an answer to this question anywhere.

Thank you for time and kindness.

  • Moving from old gen to next gen would involve an upgrade purchase.

I have no doubt there will be a standalone upgrade deal on the store but gold and ultimate editions come with cross gen bundles (both versions so you're future proof).

Old gen consoles will have crossplay together, they can't play against next gen consoles.

Next gen consoles and PC will have cross play.

On PS5, in theory you can play the PS4 version and potentially play against last gen Xbox -- I'd assume you can do the same thing with the Series X

@Speedranger53 With the disc I dont think it will, I think it's only works with the digital version of the game, probably down the line they will probably have a disc reader that can convert it to xbox one to series x

@Speedranger53 Basically the Gold and Ultimate editions on Series S/X come with a version for old gen, as well as the current gen one. If someone on the S/X plays the old gen version they should be able to play with XB1 and PS4 players, they will be on the 64 player maps though.

Edit: Added a picture in case my explanation wasn't great.

  • @Speedranger53 Basically, the Series X version is a different game. It will be 128 players on larger maps. Xbox One will be 64 players on smaller versions of the maps.

The only way I see Xbox One/PS4 being able to play with Series X/PS5 is in the Portal. The Portal lets you set parameters for whatever you want in the game. That means a Series X/PS5 player could create a 64 player lobby or less. But that could get complicated because the game would have to evaluate each lobby to see if its compatible or not.

@Speedranger53 Not sure TBH, it's not something I've looked in to. It may be worth checking with a local retailer.
