@flcrmthere is more too it than just assisted aim. There is less recoil (25% reduction), which then makes less spread. So the implemented changes for spread impact KBM players more. PC players have to deal with weapon recoil, screen recoil (aim off center), and now random spread. So you could be really good at aiming, yet a console player with aim assist has to do much less for the same aiming accuracy. Aim assist also works thru cover (shrubs, grass, trees) and thru smoke.
If aim assist is on, there should be no recoil reduction. Controllers should only get the recoil reduction when Aim Assist is off.

Aim assist is affected by smoke and vegetation.
If you are getting shot through smoke/vegetation then there were likely clues to your position.
I've tested this. Clip below. Full aim assist. Enemy player largely obscured by vegetation, AA snap is not activating.
Had this been a real scenario I would have just lined up on the player tag/visible silhouette....manually.

There are other videos of this where it is shown. Also, just because an enemy is in view doesn't mean the player sees them. The game assumes the entire FOV is targeted. So if you are "in view" of a console player, and they fire, chances are you will be locked on.
Also, for smoke, it depends on where the shooter is compared to me. If I am in smoke and they are not, I am still shot. If they are in smoke, then the smoke actually works.
Those are minor, just annoying.

Does aim assist work for hip fire?Neither descriptions nor videos do a good job of conveying the nuances of aim assist in 2042.
For anyone genuinely curious about the powers and limitations of aim assist they really need to experiment for themselves. You don't need a console. You don't even need a controller.
A PC KBM player can experience aim assist by simply not touching the mouse for ~5seconds. As long as you look around (using the arrow keys), ADS (.) and Fire (Ctrl) using the keyboard you'll get full aim assist. A Portal aim trainer like AANJ7Z makes for a testing ground.
You can observe first hand the different mechanics (slowdown, rotation, snap). You can observe what scenarios trigger each movement and which scenarios don't. And when the assists do trigger you can observe how strong they are.
