Continuous Disk Access

Why does this (PC) game have continuous disk access, even when idling in menus (not in a match)?

I'm afraid the game is not well optimized, the game also writes shader cache to My Documents instead of %appdata% where it belongs which triggars OneDrive to read/write form drive.
  • I'm not using OneDrive, if you're saying that's what's causing it. Also, don't have any apps running in the background.

This behavior does not occur with any other game.

    Specs:

    Windows 11 OS

    i9 10900K CPU

    32GB RAM

    RTX 3090 GPU

    1TB NVMe DD

This has been mentioned in the past and it appears to just be how BF2042 works. The game is constantly writing to shader cache.

Do you have OneDrive uninstalled? Unless it's uninstalled it is always accessing disc.

@sk1lld, you should be able to exclude certain folders from the OneDrive sync, I believe.

@EA_Leeuwyes, you can exclude a folder on one drive, though the process is a bit more complicated than most of the users here on the forum are able to comprehend let alone understand, and it would be considered off topic for the focus of this entire forum.

a quick google search will show you how to do that. but the people over in that other topic, are a bit far fetched in accepting that, yes, there is a work around that allows individual folders to be exempted.

Google Drive allows you to do this by default to individual forums.

  • @HashiruOtokoDo you have NVidia Shadow Play/Highlights, AMD Re-Live, or XBox Game Bar running to capture content?

Because by default, all of these programs write temporary data to your drive ( or a drive if specified to a secondary storage drive ) the entire time a game exe is running.

i keep a 2TB SDD (G: ) that houses a few games, but is also the specified drive for my ShadowPlay videos and highlights.

my Nvidia Container process that is tied to Shadow Play shows persistent 4MB writes to the temp recording data folder to that drive while BF is open. your PC is going to indicate that as well, so constant writes and reads are also attributed to recording ( if enabled ) of data for later usage of video content. Those writes also coincide to the Disk Access LED on my case.

@sk1lldand @EA_Leeuw also something to consider that i forgot about

  • @sk1lld I do not use OneDrive and the process is not running, so there's no reason to uninstall it.

Since the game writes a lot of files to Documents folder, I thought it could be related to Windows indexing that location. However, excluding the Battlefield 2042 folder in Documents from indexing didn't seem to change anything.

@HashiruOtokoi hold a masters degree in computer sciences among other things, so id qualify for that title as well.

but that has no relevancy if you are using Shadow Play, or any of the content creation tools by AMD, NVidia or XBox Game bar.

but no One Drive or Content creation, okay then. then its the shader caches, you cant stop that.
