I hate specialists with all my heart. These obnoxious loud-mouth heroes don't belong in Battlefield. Battlefield is not a hero shooter.
Hero shooter : A hero shooter is a subgenre of shooter games that cover both the first-person shooter and third-person shooter genres. These games emphasize hero-characters that have distinctive abilities and/or weapons that are specific to them.
Specialists specifically make Battlefield a hero shooter
Battlefield games previously were not hero shooters because previously our player character did not matter. Empty slate, no personality, no name. The appearance, background,
name, location did not matter with regards to that character.
In 2042 Maria Falck and Maria Falck only has access to the syringe gun.
In bf1 generic Ottoman, German, British, Red Army, White Army medic had access to the same stuff that the other faction's medic, who was a different face but still a generic no-name had.
In short, you could insert any character at all into any class and it wouldn't clash with the system but in 2042 retired Swedish(??) Combat Medic Maria Falck with defined backstory could never be anything but Maria Falck and her trait is specific to Maria Falck and Maria Falck only
As for functionality, it would seem classes are ironically more specialized than specialists.
Again using bf1:
Assault specialized in anti vehicle, SMGMedic specialized in healing/reviving, auto-loading rifle
Support specialized in LMGs, suppression, supplying
Recon specialized in snipers, spotting
Specialists are not special. Anybody can be anything and I find that extremely boring and lackluster

Anybody can be anything but only Falck can be Falck with her syrette pistol?
Contradict much?
As to your BFI examples....
Assualt were more concerned with using Helriegels and SMG-08s.
Support couldn't suppress a sneeze nevermind a sniper and were often found chasing after the vehicles Assualt ignored with Limpets.
Yes, Medics revived unless they had a grenade launcher equipped of course.
And Recon usually just sniped......

1. Ok. I meant anybody can use anything and nothing is specialized. sorry if that wasn't clear
2-whatever your last point was : Sure. Doesn't detract from my points
assault still specialized in smgs and anti-vehicle equipment. Hellriegel usage doesn't detract from that
medics still specialized in healing/reviving and auto-loading rifles. The option of a grenade launcher doesn't make the healing any less exclusive
Support still had access to lmgs and resupply. Exclusive only to them
Recon was the only class to use snipers. Exclusive only to them
You understand now why I think classes are more specialized than specialists
Surely you get my point, now right?

@rippedwire01So you are ignore the unique specialisation each specialist has?
Can Angel use a sentry gun?
Can Boris call in the Supply Crate?
Can Falck use the squirrel suit?
Can Sundance use the syrette pistol?
The list goes on!
I am still not sold on specialists and wouldn't be upset if classes returned but by the Gods, they are not the spawn of Satan totally destroying teamplay and the game some people think they do!
If you want to play as a traditional Support, you can and the same is true of all other classes except now you can do a bit of mix and match between specialist and class.- Kyosji4 years agoSeasoned Ace@Trokey66 They could if they used the classic system. Have option 3 selectable like any other slot. What a sentry? Select it in the loadout. Want a squirrel suit? Select it in yoru character customizations. Squirrel suit isn't as amazing as people think. You can't attack when using it, and it can kill you depending on whats going on or how slow you are to react.
People forget that they literally replaced option 3 from classic BF games, which was usually your equipment slot, with specialist slots, then added the equipment slot options to the support slot, which limits everyone compared to other BF games. This decision made it so no one can use the medic/ammo bag if they want to also use c5 or some sort of launcher/tool like every BF game before it.
Specialists are not needed, they are literally just a slot 3 option.
