"Festive skins? Why? What happened to the dark tone of the game?!"
I think you are asking, "What happened to the realistic tone of the game"

Personally I have a much bigger problem with the specialist's faces and voicelines before and after every match. The game forces me to listen to those over and over.
They are meant to be funny, but they aren't. Neither are they original or in any way connected to the background story: Climate & economy crisis, chaos, war. The soundtrack of BF 2042 is distressing and gives me chills; Trailers had a very dark and serious tone. I might actually write a separate post about this topic, because it makes me sad.
I can only imagine the writing process:
So they just lost their homes and basically everything and out of desparation they decide to join a group of mercenaries called No-Pats to fight in a global war. What would they say? Oh, i got it:
- That's it? I'm ready for round two!
- Yeaaaah Angel does it again!
- Don't be sad. That's just how it works out sometimes.
- Easy in, easy out!

I like the quotes, they are optimistic and reflect the fun, I mean they are gloating, it's supposed to be a bit silly.
If you wanted a realistic approach, they would show the highest scorers sitting around trying to rest looking exhausted, worried, sad about lives lost etc.
But no one wants that, you actually want the gloating but with attitude.
Lol k.
