Did you even playtest?
I'd like to see the list of how many devs actually played this game. It feels like they didn't even bother looking at flow or anything. Just threw [Edit - Admin.] on a map and walked away.

And it is very unfortunate.
But it is obvious from reflecting on the many and widespread coding errors/misdesigns in the BF2042 game, that many of the programmers are newbies in this field and have no or certainly not sufficient level of knowledge/experience in how to get it right the first time around.
But worse is as you note, that even the simplest of playing/testing their own snippets of code would have made it apparent for them that it didn't work. And still, no quality controls or gates in place within the EA BF Development team to stop the barrage of many bugs to remain in the product to reach the end-users.
