Exactly. To me this is also rather strange where they might have gotten the impression that any except of a small minority of players actually liked the new installment once it was released. How they come to this conclusion is everybody's guess, but there either must be drugs involved or the were just inventing player feedback. No other explanation makes sense really.
What IS true and can be stated is that many players (me included) actually said that 'THIS is my battlefield" or "Battlefield is back". But they completely miss the point on WHEN we said that. It was right after the frankly amazing trailer and short film, painting the picture we all wanted to see. A grim future and lots of anonymous soldiers 'fighting it out'. We got the BF4 vibes and were sold a lie. At THAT time we said with great anticipation: "This is going to be GREAT. This will be our battlefield again".
And even if they then had delivered a buggy mess (as usual) but with the content the trailer promised, we would have been happy (not back then in November of course, but eventually, after say the usual 6 month of patching).
But after playing the beta (which still had only 4 specialists that were also kind of put into classes with the ones they had chosen and even without delivering the cringe voice lines which were NOT in the Beta), there much fewer players still saying this is going to be great.
And after the release and definitely after the day 0 patch I know of NOBODY out of my clan of BF veterans that would even remotely have said that. And all of us but maybe a five or six have completely stopped playing BF2042 and I am not sure how many will return in summer once the new maps (let's hope it will be AT LEAST 4 new maps for AOW like we usually got in previous iterations with every DLC) are out.
@DuaneDibbleyYou covered a lot of very valid points.
The BF2042 we have today bears little resemblance to the trailer and short film.
And I agree had they delivered what the trailer promised there would still be a lot of players playing today who have since moved on.
The other thing I would say about the beta is the fact that we only saw one map, and Orbital for me personally is the best map of the 7.
Had the Beta featured Hourglass could you imagine the furore. 🙂
As you point out many players have stopped playing now and it's going to take something fairly major to attract these players back
Sadly I am not very optimistic on the number of maps we will receive in the summer and I feel it may well just be one or maybe two at most.
I really hope I am proved wrong and we get 4 maps as you mentioned. that would definitely help to freshen BF2042.
I have to add that if they added in a proper server browser / persistent servers it would go a long way to easing my own personal frustration with the game.
