EOMM in Battlefield 2042?

I’m not much of a conspiracy/rabbit hole/tin foil hat guy but with all of the talk about SBMM and EOMM (especially) in the recent Call of Duty game I started to wonder if Battlefield could be infected by this.  Apparently back in 2017 a significant paper on the topic of EOMM was co-written by some EA employees and this was a bit eye opening.  It’s full of math equations and other stuff that I can’t even comprehend but the larger message was that they were making the argument that EOMM is a better method of matchmaking than just plain old matchmaking.  And their objective is to keep players engaged in the game to buy skins and all of that other garbage.  How do they do that?  Through “fairness”.  Now I REALLY started to wonder.

So last night I was playing a game of 2042 on Redacted with a friend and then another friend jumped in.  So the game ends and without me even talking about EOMM, the friend that jumped in says “Man I got to around 30 kills and then all of a sudden the game just started feeling wonky.  Like I couldn’t get anymore kills and just started racking up deaths”.  So I go to the scoreboard and what do I see?  On both teams the vast majority of scores were in the 30-40 range for kills and then just random amounts for deaths.  There were a couple of outliers at the top with 50-60 kills but everyone else was pretty darn close to equal.

So one friend leaves and I play one more game with the other friend and lo and behold the end of round scoreboard had most in the 20-30 kill range on both teams.

I didn’t take screenshots since I had to hold down the stupid start button just to keep the scoreboard up on Xbox and the round ran out.

Was there EOMM at play?  I’m really starting to think so. Of course it can’t be proven because EA or Dice won’t talk about it but again, the fact that the paper was written by EA employees seems to be more than just a coincidence.

Also what better way to institute EOMM than through matchmaking?  We don’t have a server browser in 2042 do we?  Hmmmm…..

I’m even starting to wonder if it was in BF5 since that had some of the weirdest and most frustrating gun engagements.  And it was at that time that all of the skins were introduced.  Now they have servers but could it still have EOMM since they’re official Dice servers?

If this nefarious type of manipulating gameplay rather than players actually playing to their abilities is being forced upon us then do we even want to keep buying their games?

I’ll be thinking about just buying GTA 6 or some other single player games in the future if this is what gaming across the board is becoming.

Stuff to consider my Battlefield friends.

  • I don't think there's any significant attempts at 'matchmaking' in those terms. 2042 dumps every player into a queue, and then that queue is dumped into an on demand Amazon AWS instance spinning up for the round. It's why (at least back when the game launched) you never kept the same group of players.

  • Except the EOMM isn't about the matchmaking process itself.  It has to do with what happens when you're IN the match.  Doing too well?  Sorry but we have to dial you back a bit.  Not doing well enough? Ok, you'll get a bit of a boost.  It's all about keeping players happy and satisfied with their game results even though the gameplay is just manipulated.  And happy players may tend to buy more microtransactions according to the big companies.

I can't say that this is definitely happening in 2042 but given that it's happening in Call of Duty (and supposedly Apex) and that the paper was co-written by EA employees I wouldn't put it past them.

There's no question that these big companies are just predatory and seem to care less and less about the games now.  My recent gameplay examples I mentioned just raise suspicions.

We've heard you. You like to PTFO -- here's a team with 31 legless bushwookies so you're always first and last on the objective.
