At first it seemed really good, but over the last couple of days it's gotten too chaotic, and i find myself firing up BF4 for some 'proper' Battlefield.

I think it's fair to say that 128 players might be too much.

I had some matches where there were 80-90 players, and it was good. Lots of action etc but you could still play strategically.

128 just ups the pace of the game beyond what battlefield is best known for.

Why not experiment with 48 a side?
