Hardcore is the only mode I will play when choosing PvP in games like these. I was ready to writ off BF2042 until Portal was announced and then I was hooked. I saw all the possibilities for my friends and I to create our own Experiences to play PvE / coop and perhaps also PvP when we have a larger party. Of course, we prefer a low TTK, etc. but as far as the HUD, I really wish there were more options to allow markers for just your team as you mentioned, just a compass and so on.
Would be nice to remove the kill cam, force 1st person in vehicles, have in-game comms if we want to open the game to randoms, increase fall damage beyond just a setting of 2, etc., etc.
I know Portal will be expanded upon which will likely include more options. ....so I'm hopefully we may see additions like this to allow further customization of player creations.
I'm sure you've seen Karmakut's milsim creations. I assume it's likely one you're talking about. I actually used some of his settings as a baseline to create our own. I agree it really looks cinematic with a clean HUD and while it makes for great content videos, there are some things you really need on there at times in order to know what's going on like weapon information, the compass as you mentioned, possibly friendly / team markers and so on. We don't flip on friendly fire because as I discovered, the AI isn't so discriminate with their fire at times. 😉
You also brought up a good point about uniforms as it's difficult to tell friend from foe. I think Karma even waffled on the FF option too as there were too many accidentally TK'ing on his server(s). I find it works fine in games like Sandstorm and Hell Let Loose because it's easier to differentiate. Maybe Portal's 1942 assets would be better for FF.
Anyhow, Portal is where it's at for us and we hope to enjoy it for a long time going forward. The sandbox idea obviously isn't new but I can't recall when I've had a degree of freedom like this in a AA game. ....and if they nurture it, we could see it grow into something that can really make a lasting impact.
