You can boost (accelerate) TGM by pressing Left Shift. You lose maneuverability when you do this.
You will be able to kill pro Nightbirds hundreds of meters away after practicing it for a while. Bug helos are 1 hit. Bad pilots are easy, but good pilots, not so much. Bug helos are faster, and more maneuverable, unless the missile is boosted. If boosted, the highly agile bug helo can bank left of right and avoid the hit. The missile has a 350 meter range. So yes hundreds of meters, but they can be outrun. Good pilots react to tone.
This video below shows how good you will be at TGM. No pilot can dodge it by high probability without losing much altitude, and it's an infantry weapon!

(The highlights at the beginning of the video are not the all scenes destroying helicopters.) Good pilots dodge all the time.
Some additional information
Had any of those pilots accelerated out of the combat area, they wouldn't have been destroyed. On this map, accelerate to the wall and use the wall to impede.
Instead, they circled the area, which makes them a great target
This is the difference between an experienced pilot and one not so much. The minute they hear tone, and see the flare, good pilots accelerate out of the range.
Additionally, the video makes it seem like 1 hits. Those birds already had 75% damage. He was doing the last hit (unless this was a 1000% portal server, but then the armor would have been destroyed too).
EDIT: When the missile is boosted, its range is cut in half to 175 meters
