Ideas for Drone/UCAV call-ins

Given the setting it would seem logical that UCAV's would be featured in 2042. Here's some ideas I had for Infantry call-in abilities:

Strike Drone

Summon a strike drone against either an armored vehicle or a static position. The AI drone would appear on the battlefield and attempt to lock on and strike the target. If, in the case of a vehicle target, it could not lock on it would attempt another pass. If that vehicle was destroyed the AI drone could be "smart" and pick and choose another target - it will remain on the BF until it finds a suitable target and fires at it. Once it finally launches its weapons, it then retreats - it would not auto replenish its ammo. And given that it would actually appear on the BF it could be intercepted and destroyed before it has a chance to deploy its payload. The Strike Drone could sort of take the place of the Attack Jet in some respects.

Fighter Drone

The fighter drone could be a simple drone that spawns in and just fires AA missiles at a player specified target and leaves or it could be a more advanced dogfighting variant that not only has AA missiles but also guns as well and can dogfight. If the latter, then it could be made to have a better turn rate than the manned fighters (no pilot to hamper it) but to balance that it would have low HP - perhaps half that of a manned jet. It might also be more susceptible to ECM. Just like its Strike brother it would focus on destroying its intended target first and, once successful, it would loiter on the BF searching for other viable air targets (jet's, heli's, aerial drones) until its fixed ammo was expended and then retreat (no auto ammo replen on these guys).

Recon Drone

Deploy a drone to the BF that would circle an area and provide enemy positions to friendlies via their minimap. Another benefit could be to extend the range of guided weapons by about 20% and virtually eliminate their lock time for any enemies in the Recon drone sphere. It would fly over its target area indefinitely until shot down and could even be directed to another position. A hardcap could optionally be set by devs so that the BF doesn't become over saturated (although they would be easily enough killed by AA weapons so perhaps this won't be an issue) - either a simultaneous cap or a total cap (once x amount of recon drones destroyed then that's it, no more)

ECM Drone

The counter to the above. In areas where a recon drone was present it would cancel out the benefits of the Recon Drone. In areas where Recon Drone was not present it would either cause distortion to the minimap or show fake enemies on - perhaps alternate between both. For guided munitions it would have the opposite effect as the above - it would increase the lock on time for enemies to target your vehicles/aircraft and it would shorten the max range at which you can be locked on to by about 20%. Vehicles would be able to see the ECM bubble so they could use it strategically to minimize their exposure to lock on weaponry. Like the Recon Drone, it would fly indefinitely until destroyed and could be redeployed to a new location at the player's discretion.

*Drones would not auto replenish health nor ammo.

  • Right now all we know is that one specialist is using a "drone" / "auto-turret" .

It shouldn't be a "call-in" at all, more a gadget, then I would like your Idea.

As a gadget, a drone can't be a big UAV at all, but a smaller one, so it would be like the older "Star Wars Battlefront / Star Wars Battlefront 2 / Frontlines Fuel of War" Recon drones alike. You can use them in a specific radius, they do some damage but they are not an overpowered gadget that you can call in for your points. Because your squad, your team is playing the points, so they should all benefit from it and not only the "Squad-leader" which implifies your Idea for me at the moment.

For a call in, some sort of big UAV would be nice, which you can control similiar to the good old Gunship like the one from BF4.

@CloudMcRip Not sure how you figure that only the squad leader would benefit. All of these would potentially benefit the entire team. These would not be gadgets like the MAV. These would be similar to the commander drones in BF4. Obviously the fighter and strike variants would be a new concept of course.

@CloudMcRip actual it is three so far
    Dog, recon bird and turret.

You can have different radius for UAV scans. Any drone carried by someone can be immediately replace compare to call - ins.
  • @rainkloud these should be more commander then call in. As these are more team tools.

1 and 2 should could be the same thing a drone like Wingman. It could fire a rocket barge not missiles. It would have an area effect allowing driver/pilot to evade. It should give something like lock on tone just no lock on rockets.

However if a player is lasering then the rockets act as Lock-on.

@rainkloudNot at all, because I understand it like the Squad make points, the squad leader make the call in and it will be handled how it is in Battlefield V right now when you call for Artillery Support or a V1 Rocket (it may helps the team in general but still all hard earned points will only benefit the squad leader, so the squad itself doesn't benefit from their hard earned points at all). I still think drones would be better, or how @DingoKillr mentioned as "Team tools" so a "Commander" should be needed to make the call in.
I just don't want an "auto-scan" how it is in Call of Duty Modern Warfare with there UAV drones, where every soldier can make a call based on their point/kill streak. As a gadget these drones would need a "pilot" othwise it will become like the release of the CoD MW Ground War Mode with the UAV spamming.
If it would be a gadget, you would have some sort of "briefcase" where you can control a drone directly but also because you are flying the drone (or may programm an auto flying route?) you are unable to fight for this time.

  • @rainkloud I would rather killstreaks remain in COD and have the only call ins be from a team commander. In BF5 squad leader call ins were highly annoying and resulted in people trying to gank your squad from you once you met the point threshold.
  • It's a bit fuzzy but . . .

Specialists will use one Slot for their choice of 'normal' Gadgets geared towards their specialty .

    To upgrade that Slots Gadget , they'll Call-in for some Commander-provided higher-end stuff .

    Before their Call-in , the Slot had (for example) a low-yield explosives-laden anti-Vehicle 'Dog' .

    After the Call-in , there's now a nasty Rocket-equipped bigger-than-RAWR mini-tank in the Slot .

Before , a spy MAV with EMP firepower .

    After , a spy Drone with missile-firepower .

As Call-in upgrades appear to Commanders , so too does the list of who Called-in appear .

With a quick glance at the scoreboard , they decide who is most worthy of wielding 'Mjolnir' .

    If this isn't fuzzy then . . .

Specialists will require Specialists to Counter them .

I like the series' track record in the game of Countering .

There's an amazing war on the horizon .

  • @rainkloud Great ideas! In particular, I like the ECM and Fighter drone ideas. Fighter drone in particular would be a needed counter to choppers and jets that basically farm infantry all game. Give them a taste of their own medicine lol.

ECM drone would provide a nice sort of cat and mouse game with recon. I could see maybe EW specialists having a sort of battle within the battle using drones and other equipement.

I mean we're acting like the dev toolboxes don't exist to control this. You can put hardcaps per round, you can have progressive cooldown times so that each time one is called in the cooldown time doubles. You can have simultaneous instance hardcaps so the map doesn't get saturated. Any type of complaint you can come with regarding spam can be dealt with easily with caps.

Points for any spot assists, damage or kills will go to the squad so everyone gets credit.
