Maps - old vs new

Have been playing the two Portal experiences (infantry/ground forces only, and BF3/1942) a lot recently.

How good are the older maps, versus the 2042 maps! This has highlighted for me the need for DICE/EA to dramatically improve map design if they want longevity for this game. Or else, just add the older maps to the AOW rotation.

My final gripe is that Portal still does not backfill games with AI. I am regularly reduced to running around the maps looking for other players.

  • @Lancelot_du_Lac Yep. I hadn't played many (didn't play BF3 or a ton of BC2 multiplayer as it blue-screened my computer) so this is my first time really experiencing them and...yeah holy crap.

I think we all knew the fairly minor changes that DICE has outlined to two of the maps in their "feedback loop" thread weren't going to be meaningful changes to the feel of the maps, but experiencing the vast difference in quality of overall design of the 2042 maps vs. the BC2/BF3 maps was wild. Like, I was legit mad whenever the server would rotate maps to a 2042 map.

Would absolutely love to see them folded into AOW, especially if infantry-only became a mode we could play there. They should be the standard that all current and future maps are compared to in terms of quality - there are open areas sure, but they're packed with all kinds of terrain elevation changes and barriers/buildings to create natural corridors and areas where you have limited exposure so you can move more safely/return fire more easily. Multiple paths to approach objectives that most 2042 maps don't feel like they have as objectives are either in open areas or inside/on top of buildings with very limited and easily defended access points.

Like...I normally play 128 breakthrough but as long as the infantry-focused CQ in Portal with older maps is in the rotation that's probably where I'm gonna stick. By far the best experience I've had since launch (even on the 2042 maps, which aren't remotely as fun to play), and the only time I've played and kept wanting to play just a few more rounds.

Even the 1942 maps play better than the 2042 ones.

El Alamein at first glance looks terrible, but once you get to grips with it you soon realize the dunes hide ample approach routes, the high ground gives advantage but not an overwhelming one.

All the things they clearly tried to do with the 2042 maps with distance interacting with terrain just work better with the older maps.

I have started to wonder if they're not adding more portal maps out of embarrassment, preferring not to highlight just how poor their efforts have been with 2042.

I note that the special mode has old maps and 2042 equipment is still around after two rotations of bi-weekly Portal offerings. Hopefully, this will become a permanent mode.

Flashback Conquest gone from Portal, already!
