Matchmaking Filter
I think abandoning the server browser system from the previous battlefields titles is the right move forward.
The problem with the server browser system is that, depending on the region and player count, you would have very few full servers with their own number of players that are queued to join that specific server only and usually if you add all the players currently queued across all the servers, they could have easily joined and filled a new server. Some players do join empty servers in hopes for other players to join and hopefully slowly fill the server but with the lack of communication between players looking for a game, some would rather join a queue for an already full server. The matchmaking system would take care of all the communication needed to create an adequate number of servers to accommodate an inconsistent player count throughout the day. This should in return help maintain or even increase the player count but with the current iteration of the matchmaking system, I would say its negatively impacting the player count.
PUBG and COD also uses a matchmaking system but what they have in common that 2042 doesn’t have is that the players can choose multiple options or game modes to matchmake for. In 2042 you can only choose one game mode out of the current 4, while in COD you select multiple game modes and in PUBG you can choose multiple maps. Obviously, you have a higher chance to fill a server quicker with people with a broad selection than just using players with a specific selection especially for 128 player game modes. If they added a filter option, this would not only benefit the player count but also help with 2042’s lack of content.
Depending on the time of day, there aren’t enough players to matchmake for all 4 game modes so most of the time the current active players are stuck playing one game mode for their entire play session and the remaining 3 stay dead. Even during peak player count times, depending on the region, one or more game modes are still dead. This together with the least number of maps and guns I’ve ever seen in a battlefield game would of course lead to most players to get bored and complain on the lack of content.
I think that 2042 is the best battlefield to add a matchmaking system because of the variety of game modes and map sizes, if you include portal, to accommodate a variety of maximum player count game modes and not to mention the AI they added which btw should never take up more than half the lobby in any game mode. There are game modes that accommodate 8v8, 16v16, 32v32 and 64v64. Imagine playing the smaller game modes first and as more players matchmake, slowly joining bigger matches instead of 16 people waiting in a 128-player lobby. I don’t know about others, but I always play in the all-out war section of the menu and not the portal section because almost every time I’ve tried any of the limited game modes, they are barely anyone playing. I feel like combing the portal game modes and all-out war game modes into a single matchmaking system would help with the longevity of the game.
