A lot of people say they need rented servers and server control. If that was the case with enough people, then Portal wouldn't be XP Farm wasteland that it is now.
One of the most annoying things before BF1 were custom servers. Finding a good server without braindead rules was a painful experience. You could find a good server with consistant population and decent rotation, but that wasn't always the case.
I still remember going through 10 servers looking for a good one without some stupid rule or mode setup like instant vehicle spawn or 10,000 tickets or something else that would make your experience miserable.
Then there were entitled admins who would ban you if you were too good or used something they didn't like.
Yes, having no map rotation is a pain, and I hope they can do something about it in the future. But that doesn't stop me from having a fun time in this game.
Wow, that is such a bad take on rental servers and admins.
For starters, Portal is nothing and I do mean NOTHING like having your own server and the one of the biggest reasons it is a "wasteland" is because it isn't promoted in any way shape or form beyond the weekly "Promoted Modes", why would someone go to Portal if they can just click the Conquest or Breakthrough tab? They haven't updated it or added new content since launch so what is the draw to Portal?
Also, you can't permanently list your server or properly admin it or promote your server in any meaningful way. The reason it is populated with 1000% HC and XP farms is because EA/Dice have made it that way, whether intentionally or not.
As far as finding a good server "without braindead rules" in previous titles I usually had a dozen or so favorited "Vanilla" servers at any given time, so it obviously wasn't THAT hard to find.
I can only assume you've never tried to run or admin your own server; I've been a part of the administration team on several different Clans' servers going back to BF1942 thru BF4, admining a server is usually a pretty thankless job, not to mention having to regularly stop your gameplay to follow someone around to see if they're cheating, teamkilling or griefing other players.
We usually had a group of admins and every kick or ban we did, we had to justify with the other members, it wasn't just arbitrary and would usually only be implemented after a several warnings had been issued.
The guys who setup their servers with "stupid" rules, and "badmins" so what? they paid for them, if you didn't like it, you could simply opt not to play there anymore. I know I had more than a few I would avoid, but like I said their money, their server, their rules.
- UP_LordPlumber3 years agoSeasoned Ace@Ironhead841 I'm speaking from my experience after being banned from 10+ servers in BF4 alone. I ended up purchasing a VIP slot on one of the SiC servers (One of the best guys that hosted BF4 servers IMO) and playing on those all the time.
And no, I don't have that much free time on my hands to host and run servers. My time is expensive, and if a "job" of watching and banning suspicious people from your server doesn't pay well, I ain't doing it. That should be done by the software or team voting or at the very least report button that temporary suspends a player from the server until you review him- Ironhead8413 years agoHero
I don't know what you could be doing to get that many bans, I think I've only be banned off one server the entire time I've played Battlefield, across all the different titles, that's just really weird.
Real, live administration is the only effective ant-cheat, and it has the perks of weeding out teamkillers and griefers as well, no other software solution will ever, EVER come close.
I'm not sure how much free time you think it takes to do this stuff but I was working 50-60 hours a week hanging iron and I didn't find it overwhelming.
As far as getting "paid" you know and I know thats not how it works, thats where having several admins comes in handy. Shares the burden a bit.

@Ironhead841Trust me, after passing 3k/d mark, you begin to get some weird looks from this community. When you have players joining as a spectator and going "Yep, he is cheating, ban" you start to look for some safe servers.
Back in BF5 forum times I even had a huge pile of chat cutouts of enemies, my team, and even spectators accusing me of aimboting.I won't lie, in BF4 playing on the same server all the time was a cool experience. Many experienced and skilled players joined there for the same reason, so it was sweaty, but incredibly fun and rewarding.
Todays anticheat is fairly good. I haven't seen an obvious hacker yet, so a need for constant monitoring is not required.
By "griefers" I suppose you mean baserapers or simply people who kill enemies/vehicles as soon as they spawn in base? I haven't really notices this trend in the past few games as you spawn air vehicles in the air and bases are quite far away and often have basecamping AAs there.

Lol we thought it was funny at the time 😂 In hindsight it was a little bit of admin abuse. We would shadow suspected cheaters and take video before perma-banning so we did some good too. I’d love to see rentable severs with admin again, we were happy to pay for both the servers and Procon.
