Need opinions on getting back into the game after 18 months

Hey folks.  I'm a longtime Battlefield player (since BF4), 57 years old, never been very good at the game in terms of killing but I love BF because of the team and support aspects.  Out of curiosity I reloaded BF2042 and started trying to get back into it, and, well...I'm struggling.

Here's the deal.  I like to run and gun and aggressively play objective offense and defense, mostly as infantry, but I am total garbage at it.  I haven't messed with much in the way of FPSes for over a year now so I'm rusty as hell (and that layer of rust basically only covers more rust).  I'm trying to get back into the game playing Angel and throwing ammo like it's going out of style and that's OK, but I'm dying ridiculous amounts.  Feels like every time I stick my head up I'm getting taken down almost instantly.  I don't think it's the game, I just think I've lost whatever touch I may have had for playing 128-player Conquest.  I haven't unlocked a lot of the weapons that are locked behind achievements and accomplishments (since I haven't played since, like, uh, S2?) so I'm using things like the K30 and SFAR-GL and getting mollywhopped.  Oh, and I don't have a squad or platoon or group to play with in 2042.  I do in BF4 but they stick to that pretty much.

Anybody got any advice for a casual, bottom-percentile player to get back into BF2042 and have some fun?  Nopats or weapons that are particularly easy/forgiving to use while I get my BF legs back under me?  Things to avoid?  Game modes to avoid (64 vs. 128?  Conquest, Rush, TDM)?

Performance wise the game feels a lot better since the last time I played, and I want to get back into it (and BF4) at least a little bit.  Thanks.

  • First of all, thanks @ATFGunr for the awesome tip on Portal.  I unlocked several more guns in my Portal bot match and got some of the weekly Battle Pass stuff done too.

Then I went back into the land of Real Internet People and figured I'd try out Haven since I hadn't seen it yet and...hoo boy.  It's a really cool map, but man, urban warfare.

Squads won't stick together and I end up on my own.  I move, I die.  I move slowly, I die slower.  I don't move, I die from behind and don't actually contribute.  Just endless Sundances and Borises with scatter grenades and sentry guns everywhere.  Meta loadouts and level S200+.  While I'm out here at level 75 with my newly-unlocked AKS-74U, which is positively antique in BF2042, because I dunno, maybe it was an heirloom in Mutti Falck's family from when her Papa Falck was with the East German border guards or something.  But it's got wood on it, which makes it awesome no matter how crap it actually is.

Finding groups that stick together is almost impossible, and of course if you're by yourself in this game, you're messy messy roadkill.  You might get one guy but there's always three more.  The low point was when I was cowering...uh, strategically concealing myself...in a blown-up building and a Sundance came leaping in through the hole in the wall.  I opened up first, got the first THREE FREAKING HITS WITH AN AKS-74U on her...and got deleted.  Instantly.  While she was jumping.  Hack?  Nah.  Somebody with really good aim, and better reflexes than me.

But I'm not giving up, I'll keep poking away at it.  It'll get better, maybe.  It probably will, in fact.  And if it doesn't, well, there's always the next Battlefield.  Although if the past two have been any indication of how they'll treat an old broken-down part-time FPS gamer, I'm not optimistic.

Besides, going 4-14 on Haven still beats sitting through the all-day meetings I'm stuck in at work the next two days. :D

(Oh, found a Hardcore CQ64 server and tried it for a bit.  Would've been better if I hadn't gotten stuck in a squad by myself.  Oh well, at least I bookmarked it for later.)

@AOD_moose004 Glad it worked out for ya! I think we are playing because the game has the bones to be good, and we keep hoping for that magical round where PFTO is a thing, network compensation is low, and we can have some fun. Those rounds happen… but man not as much as I’d like. Not nearly enough. You’ll get better, glad you’re having some fun Moose!

@AOD_moose004 The AKS is not good, most portal guns are bad sadly. A good gun can make a massive difference. If you're not sure what's a portal gun - portal guns have only 2 magazines, regular and extended, and no different ammo types. Except the P90, which has no different mags, but it's still a portal gun. They're also all positioned below the regular weapons in the weapon select menu.

If you can do the weekly missions, you should be able to unlock the SCZ decently fast, which is a very good SMG.

I've also felt like haven can get a bit ridiculous with its terracing and the small windows people can randomly shoot out of to be honest. I've heard people say it's better on breakthrough.
  • 2042 is the worst game of the franchise. Wait until anti cheat comes to BFV in April.
