The problem is that they were largely ineffective for the user and annoying for the pilots. They weren't fun for anyone. I would much prefer AA systems (and anti ground vehicle systems) that require direct player agency. Where the player is wholly responsible for the damage dealt to the enemy and the player is wholly responsible for avoiding taking hits. AA guns, lasers, things that require consistent aiming from the player.
