DICE have kept class, yet specialist without classes could work just as well. So why?
Maybe there will be class restricted items.
Like Assault no Anti-Vehicle weapons, Engineer repair tool, Recon C4 or Support Medic/health.

@DingoKillr where did you see this? From what I saw the specialists are the classes/specific class roles so the medic class right now far is Falck, but there will be other combat roles later under medic embodied by other heroes.. Personally I'd kill 10 puppies to have the real class system back as I hate hero shooters and want the option to play as a US or Russian soldier like in previous BF games instead of having to play as a No-Pat just because I want to play medic.
The entire Specialist system really kills my hype for 2042.

One of the good things about BF, is the feeling of being 'another soldier' on the battlefield and this will probably change.
If the specialist classes become Hollywood-heroes, with all kinds of tricks and moves, then the game will become something else (more like Apex and games like that). And the focus of the game-play will be less on gun-fights, than we are used to.
We will have to see. Hopefully the 'traits' of the specialists are not too important for game-play and we still have some 'core-gameplay', where players are mostly on a level playing field. Weapon selection/skill and use of cover, are hopefully still the most important factors for infantry play.
But at least the number of upcoming buffs/nerfs for specialist gadgets, will give us several new BF-memes...

As much as I hated BF5 Elites that system is much better than this Apex Legends BS. They should have stayed with the classes and made these specialists Elites. I think I'm so frustrated by specialists because the trailer had a metric ton of fan service and queues from BF3/4 and then they cut the literal heart of out Battlefield...the class system and replace it with Apex Legends with is markedly NOT Battlefield.

There are 4 class Assault, Recon, Support and Engineer.
So far there are 10 specialist, we known of 4. 5 if you include Sundance -wingsuit.
Maria is a Medic specialist under the Support Class. There is no Medic class.Additional medic will be mostly likely under the Support class too.

My point is I don't want to play a specific person (ie a Hero/Apex Legend), I want to play a generic person as the class like we've always done so if I want to play Medic I'm "the medic" and not Falck with no way not to be Falck unless I pick a different classes specialist or another specialist under the support class.
