Out of region matchmaking

Is just just a nightmare. Playing in a crossplay off TDM map last night with about 7 players and the rest bots. My ping was 27, with an average server ping of 38. Suddenly the game lags out for all, and goes to an ALAT of 70. Sure enough, one new player had joined. If the network compensation is basically splitting, that means the new player had a ping over 110. Why would the matchmaking join that player into the match we were in? My hit reg goes into the toilet above 60, so the only option is to quit or just stop expecting to shoot anything. This translates to all games regardless of crossplay status, as it’s an issue with network compensation.

Why Dice? Why do you matchmake high ping players into these games? If it’s VPNs fooling your algorithms then you need to step up your programming. Regardless the low pop maps really shine a light on the horrid programming we do have. The quick answer is ping limitation. We need some kind of fix, which I don’t expect this late in the game cycle, but they sure as hell need to have something better in whatever next game they bring out because it’s ridiculous what we have now. High pings should not be a negative effect on all the other players, where a person can literally drag down all the others,

  • I believe as some regions are getting less and less players we are seeing more VPN's. High ping players have always been an issue in Battlefield. In BF4 you could feel a high pinger log in on the server everybody lagged. Thats why rental servers where so popular you could just kick the high pinger right out.

  • Just joined a server with my 27 ping... and an average latency of 158. 158!! C'mon Dice get it together.

@ATFGunr @sk1lld The ping should be displayed on the scoreboard, just like we had in BF1. Back then you would also immediately experience the server performance dropping when a high pinger would join the match, at least then you had some confirmation.

Another legacy feature that got dropped, just like seeing which server location you were in yourself.

A server browser with server details anyone?

But I agree above all a ping limiter would help. The downside of this is that the game becomes completely unplayable in less populated regions.

I'm of the opinion that, EA/DICE won't give us a server browser because of this exact thing. It would be too easy for someone OOR to join a far server bringing the cloud servers to their knees. A ping limiter would work but this would mean some won't be able to play.

I still won't give up on server browsers EA needs to sort their servers.

@sk1lldEvery BF has had the ability to join on an out of region server, you didn’t need a VPN to do it either. We had rented servers in ATF Clan and would boot any ping 150 or higher just so everyone else could play. The fact that the algorithm match makes pings this high is the issue. Playing with a really high ping wasn’t fun, but now they compensate for it and the result is an unintentional exploit. At one point playing with the 158 average ping another new player was added, and the ping dropped to 104. That player must have basically been inside the AWS server lol. The gameplay at that point though became speedy. Everything moved faster than it should, almost felt like I could have a seizure (figuratively speaking). Network compensation is basically an exploit that allows high ping players an advantage. It stinks that people may not be able to find an active game in their region, however punishing everyone to benefit 1 makes zero sense.

I completely agree, the server compensation really is the issue. seldom does it work effectively.

Indeed.  And if no server-browser then what DICE could at least do is enable full progression on Portal modes (matching that of AOW)—server admins could then manage high-ping users and AOW would still be available for everyone else. Seems a win-win to me unless I’m missing any downsides?

@TheseusJason The only downside would be in the minds of the bean counters as we might be “less engaged” in the game. Personally I’d think more investment would occur but what do I know?

That would be a good move. But for whatever obscure reason they seem to not want to add this option to bring the players a more enjoyable gaming experience. ☹️
