Giving the game away for free, second week of season and a double exp event all converging is more likely causing this than locking gadgets.
If it was just locking gadgets we would have seen these numbers sooner. My money is on ps plus and double exp being the driving factors

It's also worth noting that BF2042 was offered at its lowest price on steam sale of -70% off this weekend, globally.
