I know what you mean. I have a ton of people I want to play with but we can never get in the same server together unless its Portal

removing a lot of functionality from the old bf which worked well is a choice. (in short another debate) but that of transformed 20 years from a game into a team now up to 4 players, I do not agree.
if it's 4 players max, change the name of your game because it's more of a battlefield for me.
The party option, though I hate the name (it should be squad or platoon) works well in that it keeps a group of players together throughout their session playing the game. But it needs to be able to hold more than 4 players. At minimum 6 but maybe even 8 so two squads of friends can join a game.
Old style servers are a must too, at least then you know the map will change each round and you will swap between attack and defend in Breakthrough.
Without a doubt this is one of the reasons players are heading back to older BF games. If they can't all play together, why bother at all.
This is precisely what has happened with my regular BF friends, there are usually 6 of us, but with 2042, two of us are out in the cold
We'll be playing BFV until this is changed.
