Portal BF1942 Classic Conquest Feedback

Hello guys,

I wanted to share my differents points of view on the game through detailed posts. Today I would like to start with the BF1942 Classic Conquest mode of BF Portal vs the Original BF1942, what are the good points and the one that needs to be adjusted to get a better experience.

First of all let me precise something: I didn't bought BF2042. As far as it may seems weird, I'm not finding that much fun in recent battlefields as I had playing the older ones. I still enjoy it and especially when my mates are joining me, but recent mechanisms of the franchise altered the experience I used to have back in the days. The franchise and I evolved and my vision of the game went different from what the game became. 

So this year I didn't bought BF2042, instead I bought BF Portal, that's where my interest is, that's where I will put my money and that's here that I see the true potential of the franchise.

As a BF1942 fan, I was hoping a lot from BFV but didn't get all the elements necessary to feel the game was perfect. Don't get it wrong, i still think that BFV is a good game, the maps where good, the new mechanisms such as squad revive, squad reinforcement/call-in menu, fortifications, vehicles able to tow mobile guns, the smooth and detailed movements of the soldier, this feeling of a good and smooth gunplay... were all good points. On the other hands some ideas weren't here: lack of USSR, Japan, USMC, Italy, France and many other factions and vehicles; the weird approach of guns/vehicles with some being non realised prototypes, the different skins that starting from the trailer weren't matching the theme of the game and so on.

With BF Portal, I really hope one day (in few years) that we will have the opportunity to get the perfect WW2 Battlefield using all assets from BF1942 & BFV. Until this moment I'm really glad to re-experience BF1942 remastered which is our topic today.

Good Points:

  • The maps looks incredible !!!

It's really beautiful to play El Alamein and Battle of the bulge with these modern graphics !!

- El Alamein is even more enjoyable now thanks to new design of the desert with more dunes to hide and avoid a flat sand desert. We still have this feeling of a big desert and at the same time we have some opportunities to hide a bit better thanks to the terrain elevation of the dunes and the dust coming from the vehicles around.
Only missing: the 2 villages at the north west and norht east of the map. North east has been replaced with a forward outpost where start the rush rounds but nothing replace the village at the north of the german base. It was strategical places for vehicles to replainish in ammos ! Can you consider updating it in the furture ?

- Battle of the bulge is really beautiful, only the point lost its feeling, it's lacking a lot of cover compared to what it was used to be. Can  you consider adding more Rocks/ cover in a future update ?
  • ASSAULT CONQUEST RETURNS (and should be considered as its own mode) 
  • NO AUTO HEALTH REGEN
  • INSTANT DEATH
  • VEHICLES SPAWN DIRECTLY ON MAP
  • HALFTRACKS KEEP THEIR ORIGINAL IMPACT (Mobile spawn station + Healing station + Ammo Station when passenger)
  • RADIO (nice and funny addition to the game when in transport vehicle)
  • USE EQUIPEMENT AS PASSENGER (in a jeep/kubel)
  • MINES ARE 1 HIT-KILL
  • MEDKITS & REPAIR TOOL COOLDOWN (Medkits & Wrench have a timer to not abuse it)
  • BF1942 CLASSIC THEME (this glory original theme finally return in the end of round <3 It should be selectable for main menu theme)

Points to be ajusted:

TITLES IN BLACK: Points the community can still tweak in their own experience

TITLES IN ORANGE: Points that are currently blocked and can't even be tweak in a personnal experience

  • SPAWN SYSTEM

PROBLEM: Original spawn system not respected, Current system offering too many possibilities, Dispersion of the fights + Breaking the purpose of Assault Conquest mode

SOLUTION: Bring back original spawn system, only on flags+ mobile APC/transport planes in waves of 24 secs.

SOLUTION: Bring back the correct spawn system from BF1942
                     At the very least it should be limited to squad member only on Squad Leader & Squad Leader on none

Spawn system is one (if not) the most important mechanic inside battlefield. 

Currently: Each players can spawn on the different bases own by his team + Mobile APC + Squadmates... In other games such as BFV there's even other team vehicles, spawn beacon... This numerous possibilities reduce the effect of a proper frontline and split the fight all around the map instead of focusing it on specific locations. in maps such as El Alamein if the spawn possibilities are all over the map and not focused on the bases, the map feel empty due to the lack of people on the fight for bases.

This recent spawn system played a huge role in the failed attempt to bring back Assault Conquest on Hamada map in BFV. A UK pilot could just take a plane and drop at the other side of the map, make his entire squad spawn on him even before they capture a base. Even if they got killed they could use a new plane or a spawn beacon. Now imagine 2 or 3 squad doing that and the result is fight all around the map instead of specific points.

In BF1942: Players could only spawn in waves of 24 secs and only on the bases/flags own by their team + Mobile APC/transport. This system focused the fight directly on the flags by preventing too much dispersion of the players on the huge maps. Furthermore more than half the maps of 1942 were set in Assault Conquest mode (such as Battle of the Bulge), and in this mode the main purpose is for the attacker to reverse the situation and capture all bases of the maps to prevent the defender team to spawn and kill the remaining soldiers alive. Once it was done the match was won. 
  • FLAGS CAPTURE MECHANIC

- PROBLEM: Original flag capture system not respected, balance is affected

- SOLUTION: Bring back old system with white flag status

In BF1942 if there is a fight for the control a flag (no matter the number of soldiers in each team in the cap area), the flag is white and no one can spawn on it. Once there are only soldiers of the offensive team in the capture area, they can start to capture. But if there's at least 1 attacker in the area, defensers can't use the base as a spawn point.

Currently, there's no white flag situation so defensers can continue to spawn on the base despite there's a fight for the control of it. In the other hand, attackers can still capture the base despite the presence of one reamaining defenser in the area. It's a different kind of balance but it's not appropriated to BF1942.
  • SPOTTING + MINIMAP INFORMATIONS:

PROBLEM: Original system not respected + it's heart breaking BF1942 game balance

SOLUTION: Remove any form of spotting (gun shots on minimap, direct spotting, binoculars, classes perks...) + Minimap to only display flags, teammates and free vehicles

BF1942 was closer to the Hardcore mode we know from past titles. No health regeneration, low TTK, no spotting and it needs to stays like that !
All form of spotting have to be removed from an official "Classic" server ! 

Of course the option will still be present when creating a server on portal but the official "Classic" experience created by the devs should remove all forms of spotting, it's the core of the game !
  • SQUAD SYSTEM ADAPTATION TO BF1942

- PROBLEM: Squad system wasn't a thing in BF1942, is currently not adapted (squad spawn) but can't be removed due to matchmaking

- SOLUTION: Readapt the system, instead of 4 men squad with squad spawn, it should be higher number of men/squad like 5 or 6 and no squad spawn

SOLUTION: 6 men squads + Squad Internal location ping system + (eventually squad revives).

Squad system wasn't a thing in BF1942 and the main purpose of the squad is to be able to spawn on each other which is something uncompatible with the design of BF1942. The squad system can't be removed because players are joining their squad of 4 before joining a server. 

My proposal would be to open the squad size to 6 men. Even if people join the server as a 4 men squad, 2 other players will be able to join them if the squad is on "fill the remaining squad places" option. Inside the squad players are able to use the Ping location system. If it's not enough maybe the squad revive mechanic should be considered but I'm not for it in a official Classic experience because Revives weren't a thing back in this game.
  • HEAL, AMMO & REPAIR STATIONS

PROBLEM: No presence of heal, ammo & repair station on the map, players can't resupply or heal/repair

SOLUTION: Bring back ammo box, heal locker and repair station on dedicated locations of the maps

We're missing these basic tools, it makes the Flag/base even more attractive for players to stick around these supplies.
Currently the repair station building exist but doesn't repair our vehicles, the medics are very rare to find in a match due to SMGs being totally useless/broken at the moment and no classes posseds an ammo box so players can run out of ammo quickly.
  • VEHICLES ARE UNBALANCED (INFINITE AMMO + OVER HEALTH)

PROBLEM: Original infantry to vehicles balance not respected. Vehicles are unbalanced due to infinite ammo and increased health

SOLUTION: Limit the number of ammo (30 shells + 400 bullets for a tank) and decrease their health + increase the coefficient of critical damage in the engine (1 Hit Kill)

As said earlier BF1942 was closer to an Hardcore experience from recent titles than the recent "regular" mode. All vehicles had limited ammunition, no health regen and medium tanks could be 1 hit-kill by a shot in the engine. It's a core balance mechanic between the infantry and vehicles that is affected. A tank or anti-tank soldier should be able to 1 Hit-kill a medium tank by shooting in the rear or kill it in 3-4 shells/rockets on fronatl and not 6-8 as how it is today. 

Currently an anti-tank can only damage a tank with its 3 rockets from his spawn. Back in 2002 it could potentially kill 6 tanks in correct situation. The difference is way too big and breaks the purpose of the anti-tank classe.
  • FACTION RESTRICTED EQUIPMENT

PROBLEM: Original authenticity of the game isn't respected

SOLUTION: Restrict the equipement to their original factions

That's something I never understood about the franchise: it started correctly with authenticity to respect faction restriction and then moved to have infantry sharing all equipement while vehicles stayed restricted to factions, WHY ?

Anyway in BF1942 "Classic" the equipment MUST be restricted to their original faction as how it was in the original game. There's nothing more badass than seing an US solider with a STG or a German with a Thompson. It means they won a previous fight and that's really rewarding for the player that are proud to show they really WON this weapon and not just spawned with it.

  • CLASSES:

PROBLEM: Perks didn't exist in BF1942

SOLUTION: Remove the perks or adjust them to not imply a spotting system

  • SCOUT CLASS:

PROBLEM: Binoculars are spotting and perks is spotting enemies that shoot at you.

SOLUTION: Remove the perk or replace it with a movement speed bonus, Bring back the Artillery coordination mechanic for the Binoculars

I was kind of disappointed when i saw the new purpose of the binoculars, not specially because it was used to spot the enemies but because EA/DICE made this spotting mechanic which didn't exist in the original place, meaning they're not planning to remaster the original mechanic where the binoculars from the scout are giving a direct POV to all artillery units on the map to follow their shells and correct their angle.

I really hope to see this classic mechanic back and remove the spotting from the Classic Conquest server. I totally agree binoculars can spot in other servers but not in the CLASSIC one.
  • ASSAULT CLASS:

PROBLEM: Perk is 3D spotting nearby enemies and outperform the scout class.

SOLUTION: Remove the perk or replace it with a bonus on radius (not damage) for grenades

The current perk of the Assault Class is to spot nearby infantry and show them on the minimap. In addition to have the best weapons they have already all informations. Anyway the spotting system MUST be removed from the Classic server !

If perks can't be removed then let's give the assault class a perk more on par with its role and not something about spotting.

In a personnal server and not a "Classic" server that should reproduce the original game I would have given the ammo box to this class, but we're here talking about the Classic server.
  • ANTITANK CLASS:

PROBLEM: Original class not respected and unbalanced with only 3 rockets and vehciles that have higher health, Needs a rebalance ASAP.

SOLUTION: Remove the perk or replace it with heavy grenade bonus damage on vehicles + Bring back the 6 rockets at spawn and decrease tank health + give back the 1 Hit-kill in the engine on medium tanks and planes.

This class needs a rebalance ASAP !
The Anti-Tank Class is the one that suffered the most from this remaster. Not only they're ammo has been divided by 2 but the enemies tanks have also 2 times more health... The difference from original BF1942 to this Portal version is HUGE.

Planes should be 1 hit-kill with a Rocket Launcher in CLASSIC server, Medium tanks ( PzIV & Sherman) should be also 1 hit-kill in the engine. Medium tanks should take 3 rocket maximum on frontal. It's not normal that a Anti-Tank DEDICATED class can't kill 1 tank with it's full stock at his spawn.

Grenades in BF1942 were dealing good damages to the vehicles, giving the Anti-Tanks class this original damage against vehicles using grenades sounds way more accurate and appropriate.
  • MEDIC CLASS:

PROBLEM: Original Medkit mechanic not respected, SMGs are broken/unusable

SOLUTION: Remove the perk or replace it with seringue to revive. Bring back original mechanic when healing requires a continuous action, Perk: Seringue if

Currently with the broken SMGs and the lack of healing crate in the maps, it's hard to find a way to heal ourselves.

I'm ok with 3 medkits to dispose on the floor in a private server + it should be able to revive other teammates with the seringue but in the CLASSIC server that should reproduce the original BF1942, the medic should use the medkit in the same way: holding the action of healing to restore one players health. And healing one person at a time. Back in the original game you had to choose between healing someone or doing other stuff such as shooting the enemy, you did need to spend sometime yourself to heal someone and not just drop a bag that will instantly heal everybody in a certain radius while you're doing something else.

As I said I like the current medic situation just it isn't respecting the original game while it should be.
  • ENGINEER CLASS:

PROBLEM: Perk is about spotting

SOLUTION: Remove the perk or replace it with slight explosion damage reduction, Give the N°4 Rifle without scope to the UK Engineer.


  • SMGs PERFORMANCE

PROBLEM: SMGs, (Thomspon and MP40 are outbalanced and completely broken with a ridiculous kick, no ones playing medic on the server due to that.

SOLUTION: Rebalance the SMGs and make it viable

  • TANKS SIGHTS BUGGED

PROBLEM: Tanks sight are misaligned with the gun (especially PzIV) and it sometimes seems linked to the angle of the terrain we're parked

SOLUTION: Correct the bug

  • MISSING MOBILE ARTILLERY VEHICLES + BINOCULAR MECHANIC

PROBLEM: Missing core vehicles of the original game

SOLUTION: Implement these vehicles (M7 Priest, Sexton, Wespe, BM13 Katyushas) + Artillery correlation with Scouts binoculars mechanic


  • LACK OF MAPS (Different theaters, East, Pacific, Scandinavia, West Europe, Afrika...)

PROBLEM: Not enough maps and different theaters of war

SOLUTION: Add more maps / theaters in future updates (Guadalcanal, Kharkov, Stalingrad, Telemark, Anzio, Monte Cassino, Gazala, Tobruk, Omaha, Market Garden, Caen, Midway, Iwo Jima, Eagle Nest...)

There's 3 classification of maps for BF1942: 
- Symbolic maps (Midway, Wake, El Alamein, Tobruk, Omaha, Stalingrad, Market Garden, Battle of Britain...)
- Very Good maps (Gazala, Guadalcanal, Philipines, Kharkov, Kursk, Liberation of Caen, Anzio, Telemark, Iwo Jima, Berlin...)
- OK maps (Battleaxe, Essen...)

But not all of the symbolic maps should be prioritized to remake compared to some of the good maps, because some of the most symbolics maps wouldn't present as much interest being remastered as some classed "only" as good maps. let me take 2 example:
- Guadalcanal would be a better remaster than Midway. Guadalcanal like Midway is an island but way bigger than Midway, so the ground forces have way more land to play with and between the Jungles, the mountains, the advanced outpost and the village, the variety of fight is excellent. At the opposite Midway, despite being a symbolic map, is 90% composed by the ocean to allow the naval fleet to play with just a small Island in the middle. Remastering the same naval fleet on Guadalcanal and extending a bit the ocean on this map and you'll get a better experience for everyone.

- Gazala would be a better remaster than Tobruk. Gazala posseds its unique canyons propice to ambush, epic dogfights and each base as it's unique feeling. I can already figure the videos on youtube of BF3 US Army getting ambushed in a Mil-Sim server inside a Canyon or some frenetic pursuit while playing capture the flag on this map. Tobruk in the other hand (despite being one of my favorite map) is quite a repetitive map with same looking outpost and new players risk to enjoy less a repetitive map like Tobruk compared to a specific map like Gazala).

Moreover it's even more interesting to remaster new theaters and implement new factions instead of staying with the 2 same factions all the time. So in this example Guadalcanal is more interesting than Gazala which is more interesting than Tobruk and Midway. Kharkov will still be more interesting than Gazala aswell due to the fact it will bring the USSR Red Army.

For sure we may expect Wake Island to come back at some point because it's the 1map ever designed for the franchise and it holds a special place. But please bring it with the Naval Fleet as well and not a version BFV like with only small boats.

We need to feel the entire power of BF1942 in a new engine !
  • LACK OF DIFFERENT FACTIONS (USSR, JAPAN, ITALY, USMC, FRANCE...)

PROBLEM: Not enough faction for a WW2 game, USSR, JAPAN, ITALY, and other factions from BF1942 DLC are missing

SOLUTION: Add more factions in future updates and through new maps

  • LACK OF EQUIPMENT & VEHICLES

PROBLEM: Not enough equipment & vehicles for the long-term

SOLUTION: Bring back other original weapons and vehicles from BF1942

- Complete missing factions weapons/vehicles with new designs

BRING THE NAVAL FLEETS (Aircraft Carrier, Destroyers, Submarines...)

- Bring back the other weapons from the current factions of BF1942 trhough updates (Sten Mk2s, Gewehr 43, FG42, Bren...)
- Bring weapons from the new specific faction when you will bring them (M41 Johnson LMG, DP28, Type 11, MP28, Breda 30...)
- Design new weapons to complete the missing ones (M1903 Springfield, Type 99 Arisaka, M1891/30 Mosin-Nagant, Carcano, PPSH41, SVT40, FNAB43, Type 100...)

- Bring back the other vehicles from the current factions of BF1942 through updates (Sexton, M3 Lee, Stug III, LVT, 42WLA, R75, Schwimmwagen...)
- Bring vehicles from the new specific faction when you will bring them (Kurosaken, Carro M11/30, Chi-Ha, T34/76, T34/85...)
- Design new vehicles to complete the missing ones (GAZ-67...)
  • LACK OF GAME MODES 

PROBLEM: Not enough modes for a long term in Portal

SOLUTION: Add more modes in future uodates (More Assault Conquest, Capture the Flag, Naval Assault, Squad deathmatch...)


  • ADS & SPRINT

PROBLEM: Original game doesn't present these 2 mechanics

SOLUTION: Remove ADS and Sprint from CLASSIC servers

Note: Believe me I hate not being able to sprint or ADS, but in a "Classic" server we must aim to reproduce the original experience. Why in BC2 server we can't prone but on BF1942 servers we can ADS and Sprint ? Well, unlike the other points mentionned above, I'll not be mad if these 2 features gonna stay in the server.

Well, I think that's all I can say today, after 3 weeks playing the game, about BF1942 CLASSIC CONQUEST servers from DICE. It should represent as close the original game as it was.

Really hope to see more content and updates/fixes ASAP.

I'll be back to make a full feedback of portal servers creation and what can be improved or implement in my opinion.

Hope guys at DICE/RIPPLE EFFECT/EA will get a look here and give an answer.
