Portal customisability? (Recreate Bf3 & 4 feel with V mechanics?)

I've been playing the BETA recently and must say I'm as happy as I am disappointed.   It's certainly not a bad game, but it's strange how so many things that were popular have changed.

I understand it's an older build and will reserve judgement until the final game, but I agree that alot of posters who are saying the mechanics that made the old one's great are gone.

To deviate so far from previous games (IMO)

- No picking up ammo/medic pouches, now it's back to proximity

- No crafting/building,

- No classes, making team choices matter with offsetting weapons against gadgets

- Prone has gone back 5 years where you can't lay on your back

etc. etc.

I wonder if the BETA is a huge deviation as it allows us different options if Portal really is as customisable as we hope.  So those that like some of the new mechanics can mix it with the ones they loved from previous BF.  If they just repeated old mechanics, there wouldn't be as many options in portal.

- Can we restrict gadgets to certain classes?

- Can we reduce foot soldier speed?

- Remove auto heal so medics actually count?

Apart from the website with a few tid bits on portal, has there been any real info released on how capable it is?

  • what!! reduce foot soldier speed? have you tried running across the map when there's no vehicle available or other players just race past you and not offering a lift.

Takes bloody ages to get anywhere on foot.

@DeSeTu I hope we can use settings similar and/or identically to classic mode.

    • No auto heal
    • No auto repair
    • Magazine management instead of clip management
    • No 3D spotting, mini map and map spotting only
    • No 3rd person view in vehicles
    • Friendly fire is on (including explosives)
    • Squad leader spawn only
    • Killcam disabled

Also we may need the ability to limit weapons by class, like Bolt-Action Rifles, DMR and Shotguns.

  • @DeSeTu Short answer is no. They have not been forthcoming about Portal or its capabilities / limitations since the Portal FAQ they released.

@carsono311 Yeah, after the Technical playtest and the Beta I am to 100% in a "I belive it, when I see it" mode.
  • The final game is not going to deviate from what you played so far. Ultimately, just think the final version will be the beta game minus most of the bugs you've experienced.

DICE simply should have stayed SAFE with BF by simply providing BF3 Gunplay & Feel with BF4 features and with some of BF4 & 5 mechanics. In fact, if I were them, I would have released a REMASTERED BF3 first with:

    • Real-Time structure & landscape destruction,
    • Use the latest Frostbite engine (update lighting, textures, include RTX, etc)
    • Change some of the map's landscape and layout here and there
    • Include Real-time weather changes including heavy rain, wind, sun, blizzard, etc
    • Include Real-Time fast day & Night cycles with some sections becoming really dark: encourage players to use night-vision and Flares. Cycles should depend on the length of the play session.
    • Update the Hit-rate and Network hz.
    • Slightly adjust the maps
    • Include cross-platform play
    • Release on ALL platforms including Switch.
    • Include new vehicles here and there
    • Expand the swimming gameplay from both player control and expending the maps to make swimming fights/venture possible (e.g. Rush could have a part where you need to swim and fight in the water.
    • Include new model including female medics
    • Maintain the original BF3 gunplay and feel, and vehicle mechanics
    • Include four 96 players maps (only these maps and Large Conquest allow 96 players, others stay as 64 players)
    • Adjust the Single Player Campaign: 1) Include a new level that can only be accessed if you select to play the campaign at a higher difficulty. 2. Provide a newer ending and Completion Reward such as newer weapons. 3. Improve the graphics to make it a Frostbite showcase. 4. slightly modify the levels. 5. Include a new flying level where you need to actually fully control the plane to give it that Namco "Air Combat" feel.
    • Delay the launch of BF2042 till Dec 2022 / Jan 2023.

Based on the BETA version, I think some of the best things for DICE to quickly do are the following:

    • Cut that BETA map by 2/5 or half. That will solve the lack of experience/enjoyment aspect. Use the cut map as another 128 conquests or deathmatch.
    • Keep sprinting as that makes sense.
    • Re-instate the full scoreboard information as shown in BF3 & 4: I want to see how my team is doing, how I am performing, check everyone's ping, and how the other team is doing from one button press. Don't baby people by purposely excluding crucial information. Knowing how much the other team is performing could make me determined to play much harder to win, especially if the other team is winning by 10 kills. It's a big deal.
    • Bring back Classes as it's a BF staple and makes sense from a gameplay point of view.
    • Prone on your back isn't THAT important, however, if the majority wants it back because they find it does make a difference to their gameplay then absolutely it should come back in.
    • Take out ALL vehicle mechanics and reinstate the mechanics from the older games as they got it far more correct. The physics and mechanics of the vehicles in the beta build are absolutely ridiculous, too arcadey, and doesn't make sense.
    • Have more faith in your IP - Get more HONEST opinions and "ideas for improvement" from TRUE BF players, not from CoD players. Not getting true BF players more involved in testing and obtaining feedback is insane.

Unfortunately for EA, I will NOT spend $70-100 on this game at launch because I cannot justify it from that BETA experience. Honestly, the game does NOT deserve it right now... remember, unlike other BFs there is no campaign too. I will look at the game again next Feb 2022. If they manage to fix all the key bugs, positively address the issues myself and others highlighted, and if the other maps are incredibly fun and DICE nailed the new features then I'll purchase the game without a problem.

EA definitely lost a lot of goodwill and pre-orders due to that BETA blunder.  Hopefully, they will think of a way to regain trust for BF (BF3 way more than 4 and V) is the only FPS I put hundreds of hours of playtime in, and I was really looking forward to BF2042. We'll see, but this IS EA, so... yeah.

@kregora I am pretty much the same... but just pushing the "I Believe" button repeatedly is never comforting...
