It's a game mechanic introduced in past titles to prevent excessive kill trading. The knife is probably affected hardest due to it's much slower velocity speed than bullets.

No, projectiles, throwing item etc after death are suppose to work. @OskooI_007,

  I was with @Oskool_007 on this till I saw this post as that is what I also assumed, that it was a carry over from previous games.
