Ranking up in 2042.

Before I start, I acknowledge that rank is NOT an indication of ability, especially as the game gets older but......

Since BF4, max rank kept getting bumped up during the life of the game and because of that became completely meaningless to me.

In BF3 you had Colonel 100 and it was relatively a hard slog to achieve and as such had some 'prestige' to it.

Let's not forget BBF's even made videos on it!

Let's just have one max rank over the course of the game but make it a hard slog again.

@Trokey66 And there is no battle log so how will anyone know what skill level they are at.

Or attempting to skill balance or is it behind the scenes that we don’t aee
  • @Trokey66 I'd like to see them go way back to BF2 on this one. Make max rank a hard slog like you said, but get rid of most of the ranks. In effect, make it a slog for each rank.

Why? Because people will play more for the fun of it.

I'm of the belief that stats and rank have caused as much grief as fun in gaming. Players get too caught up in stats and rank to the point it effects how they play, and of course...RAGE MODE [ON].

Not that rage can't happen anyway. But in BF2 you knew the grind was so long to the next rank that you just didn't even worry about it. You went out and played, and when you got the rank...great lol
  • I assume it will be like BFV when it comes to ranking unless they make it more like 4.

  • @Trokey66 BF2:MC had an over all score, but you had to maintain a certain score per minute to stay that rank.
Rank and level in video games is pointless other than bragging rights, anyway. (not including unlocks used as a incentive to level up)

@ZombieP1ow As my first line intimates, yes rank on the whole is 'worthless' and has become even more so lately when they keep adding more.

If they're going to do it (and they are), I just think BF3 had it about right in that sense.
  • There should be a skill based element to it. A numerical rank which just goes up as you earn XP plus a rating of Bronze, Silver, Gold or Platinum which is based off of how good you are relative to everyone else.

Have a leaderboard of all players for K/D, SPM and KPM.

Use each player's average leaderboard position to decide their rating.

Only count each player's last 10 hours of gameplay to ensure rating is representative of current "form".

    Platinum - Top 10%

    Gold - Next 20%

    Silver - Next 20%

    Bronze - Everyone else.

    For example:

There are 100 total players in the world.

You are 10th for K/D, 17th for SPM and 12th for KPM.

This makes your average position 13th so you would be Gold Rated.

You could of course do different stats if you thought there were better, more relevant ones to pick. Personally I like those. You could also do a weighted average.

These ranks could then be used to balance servers more effectively. Even if you didn't want to show all this to the players there should definitely be something like this running in the background for that purpose. We had "skill" in BF4 but it's already been shown by myself and others years ago that whatever algorithm was calculating that was nonsense.
