Re: Don't required TPM 2.0 and secure boot on Windows 11 unsupported PC?

Windows 11 officially requires TPM 2.0 and thus all games running on Windows 11 will also in theory require it. But if the game doesn't utilize TPM I don't see why it shouldn't still work. I however don't see this as something that will/can be confirmed until the game is actually out and people can test it out.

@Carbonic it does, but it is pretty easy to work around that and install windows 11 on hardware not using TPM2... as much as i don't like "hardware requirements" like TPM, i see how it can be a step towards fighting cheaters... time will tell
  • @F3NN3X  Sooner the better. It would be harder to beat than what current systems do. As it can't be spoofed right?

@1Hairy-Gorilla yes, it would add some more hurdles for cheaters as the code stored in the TPM is unique. BUT there are ways to work around this, so its not 100%...
  • @F3NN3X Well to be fair the APU's in the Xbox and PS4 are uncracked 10 years later almost, if Microsoft is using the same tech I'd say its GG to cheaters.

@1Hairy-Gorillaif it only was that easy 😉 TPM is not a Microsoft technology, they just utilize something that is already there for better security... you can buy TPM modules on ebay and plug on your motherboard... so TPM alone cant be the "anti cheat" alone, but it could work together with other methods as a layer.

Microsoft is a member of the the Trusted Computing Platform Alliance who made the specifications for TPM. It's probably not the exact same tech as the consoles but that doesn't mean it is bad.

I have actually not heard of anyone hacking the TPM tech in a way that would impact the uses games studios might have so it could have its uses I'm guessing.

  • @CarbonicTPM is not really a "hackable" piece of hardware unless an attacker has physical access to it... It can certainly be worked around though. The latest revision is six years old now...

Some emerging threats are targeting firmware and BIOS, which can manifest before the MBR and active partition even come into play... however, I would be more worried about zero day attacks for Windows 11 before anything else!  @TR-BatuhanKara

@TR-BatuhanKara Well... getting Windows 11 on there without those options is your first hurdle. I think getting Battlefield 2042 on there would be the easy part. Good luck!

Worth mentioning that outside of the TMP feature itself and the potential future use for anti-cheat, windows 10 will also receive the same gaming-related updates as announced for windows 11 for now.

So if gaming is the only reason for upgrading, in the short run there's really no need to upgrade if you're not TMP-compatible and would rather avoid the headache of workarounds to install 11.
