Specialist = Not Battlefield
This is a cash grab, pure and simple. It wasn't implemented to improve gameplay, it wasn't implemented to improve the Battlefield experience. It was implemented to sell skins. This is the single biggest indicator that DICE isn't in this to make great BF games, they are in it to make bank. Unfortunately, they have probably killed the franchise and failed at their main goal as well, at least as far as long term goals go, because I'm sure they initially sold a lot of units on the back of past BF games that didn't suck. Long story short, most long time fans of this series are the real losers.
DICE needs to get back to the basics and rediscover their passion for making great games, problem is, they are still "EA DICE".

I've been playing since battlefield 2 so i qualify as a long time fan and i like the flexibility of specialists. You do not speak for everyone
- 4 years ago@Psubond He may not speak for everyone... but 98% player loss says something.

@PsubondI truly respect your point of view. Classes and customizable builds might be the case of personal preference and playstyle.
I spent thousands of hours in BF2, hundreds in BF3, and 4. My conclusion comes down to the notion that classes should not belong to Infantry-based modes. C4, claymore, drone, mortar, rocket, and grenade launcher tend to interrupt CQC combat. Any of the main weapons, sidearm, knife, grenade of preference are enough. Auto heal, squad revive, collectible ammo from killed enemies - this is a great TDM experience in my view in a similar manner as Gun Master mode.
I truly loved the BF2 class system in Conquest. Competitive 5vs5 or 4vs4 was a completely different experience with AK105 vs M16A2 and only medic kits. So basically META Infantry class vs the META Infantry class was established in the Infantry experience. 8vs8 vehicular was quite different.
What I love about classes is the fact that AT class had at least 4 AT rockets. With the current flexible build, it is simply impossible to have more than that. I knew who was supposed to push to destroy the tank with C4, who had to cover with suppressive fire, who dropped ammo and med bags. Currently, I have no idea what am I supposed to do or who is in front of me with his equipment really. The weapon was a great indicator of my and others' abilities. Squad Management in 2042 doesn`t exist. For me, it`s a huge downgrade destroying Conquest or any vehicular mode. I speak only for myself. - 4 years ago
You are right, I don't speak for everyone and I never claimed to. In fact, in another post I mentioned that there ARE fans of specialist. But, if you want to look at the stats and state of the game, I'd have to say, specialist and their fans are greatly outnumbered. But I wouldn't ever tell anyone they are wrong for liking a game, so knock yourself out and stop worrying about what others say, I certainly wouldn't want to detract from your fun.
Update - There I changed it and added the word "most" as I'm confident that is accurate and accounts for those who might enjoy it.

you don't think that maybe the other problems with the game have SOME impact on people leaving the game and it's not 100% of them leaving because of specialists? PC performance, map design, general flow in the 128 player maps, console players having to play against MnK PC players, lack of voip, scoreboard (idc about k/d but a scoreboard at least based on exp earned would be good to see if you are pulling your weight), people being pissed off that vehicles are OP or vehicles are too weak (infantry mains argue former, vehicle mains argue the latter), taking away ability to grind T1 in single player and low number of weapons might also have a wee bit to do with it?
i don't have all of those issues with the game, just listing stuff i have seen people post that they don't like about the game
never mind the fact that a lot of people are weak minded and if a youtuber tells them to not like a game then even if they did like it before watching the videos saying not to, they won't like it anymore but that is hard to quantify and is a difficult argument to defend. I only mention that because this day and age a LOT of people are followers and like/dislike what the tv or youtube tell them to like/dislike
