Re: What is the point of Soflam?

It allows Javelins and friendly vehicles to also lock to your target and also spots enemies for your entire team. I’d say that extremely powerful and why it’s one of the last gadget unlocks.

I think you're missing my point, when I'm the vehicle or Javelin, it DOESN'T work. I still have to gain AA lock and the heli just flares out of it...if it's a tank or other ground vehicle, the  M5 doesn't lock...

Soflam does nothing but spot and put a yellow square on it.

  • @Echo6Echo I can confirm the M5 does lock onto a vehicle that is being soflamed. You have to let it lock on like the AA. Sounds like you want it to be an automatic lock-on.

@I_DYN4MO_I yep... anti air launcher shoot on ground targets and rocket launcher on air targets, especially the normal rocket launcher is more powerful and needs less hits get air down.

No, I want it to work like it worked in every other BF title out there...and again you're missing the point. I'm NOT talking about the soflam itself, I'm talking about once someone locks the soflam, what's the point of having to lock the AA as well and have it break independent of the soflam?

So, I believe it DOES work as you say as long as the SOFLAM user maintains their own lock on the target.   When using it, a quick pass will spot the vehicle; if you wait until you get a lock, it will put the yellow target on and that stays for awhile and lets others lock on with a wider variety of weapons.   The best scenario is when the SOFLAM user gets a lock on and KEEPS it locked on.  I believe that leads to a much quicker firing time for others.   But I've not tried it in awhile.   I like to SOFLAM for the 100+ spot assists it gives every round.

  • SOFLAM was my primary gadget for a long time.

But Season 1 (indirectly) nerfed it into the ground and I don't use it nearly as much anymore.

1 The G-84 receives no benefit from the SOFLAM.  All those anti-vehicle minded players chosing the G-84 over the M5 or Stinger meant there was significantly fewer potential SOFLAM partners.

    2. SOFLAM can't lock onto a stealth heli (while stealthed) which has become the most common air vehicle.  Sure you can hack, but that effectively doubles your lock on time and halves your lock on range.

Between those two things I'd wager my SOFLAM assists per round went down by half.

DICE did buff the SOFLAM from 400m to 450m, but it's not nearly enough to over come those issues.

Also spotting infantry is pretty buggy with the SOFLAM.  I have to constantly zoom in and out to get it to spot some times.  Occasionally I'll get what appears to be full LoS on an infantry and it just refuses to spot.

And the fact that the SOFLAM has a zoom function that is worthless as it doesn't spot anything that is further away...

@Echo6Echo Exactly, why does a missile being guided by a laser get flared away? Flares should have no effect on a soflam lock!

Some vehicles have dedicated laser guided weapons than can only operate with the use of external designations a la SOFLAM - They're usually way more powerful and result in what's normally a 1HK on air vehicles and at least a crippling shot on tanks.

I unlocked T1 in about 6 or 7 rounds of Breakthrough so it's definitely got potential, but I think I only ever got 7 or so vehicle destroy assists in that time so if nobody else wants to help you, it can appear rather useless. Needing to lock on to an already designated target sounds weird but I think things would get pretty janked and broken if you could just blind fire and obtain an auto lock.

I think in older titles, maybe it was 3 or 4, if you maintained your lock via SOFLAM and you were flared, the rockets would fly in circles and wait to re-obtain the lock (basically guaranteeing a kill for someone).
