I really enjoy the game. For someone like myself who doesn't get a great deal of time to play anymore it's quite enjoyable. As you, I've been playing online games since the start.. duke nukem, qwtf and so on.. I've had every and loved most battlefield titles since 1942, battlefield Vietnam, bf2 and bf4 being among my favourites.
I remember bf4 having an extremely rocky start (far worse than 2042), so much so I remember it taking a good year or so to get it how it is now, arguably the best in series. So yes, even though I love 2042 I know it will get better.. much better.
Back to topic, the matchmaking system is a fairly decent let down, repeating the same map 3 or so times is not uncommon from, I'd say, most people's experience and I truely hope this can be resolved.
Having to match make every time a map ends really doesn't appeal to me either, a new squad, a new server but yes, much of the time.. the same map.
I rarely ever get squad leader and I can't see how to create my own squad in server which bugs me because it's very rare squad orders are ever given.
Hopefully this will be resolved being my personal biggest gripe with 2042
