i have killed many pilots who are dumb enough to hover by shooting them with regular rounds (including SMGs). can confirm it works
There used to be a bug where each hit caused completely different damage. Heavy ammo did less damage through the target than others, or something. I have no idea if this was fixed. Probably not.
