I personally would choose option #3
- A console only version and a PC only version
Originally, I couldn't care less about cross-play one way or another but after reading the forums here and on Reddit as well as Twitter, obviously, a lot of console players don't want to play with PC players because PC players apparently have an unfair advantage because of mouse and keyboard or god-like superpowers because we use PCs or all PC players are cheaters blah, blah, blah.
It's tiresome and I say just give them what they are asking for.
As a PC player I personally don't think any sort of "aim-assist" belongs in any FPS period full-stop, and I honestly don't believe they'll ever get the net-code figured out between the two and I think consoles are holding back what could be achieved with this game if they had a PC-only version the number of assets and "levolution" per map would be significantly higher as well as much more detailed.
@Ironhead841The newest consoles have "plenty" of CPU-resources which seems to be important for destruction/levolution events.
The consoles may be 'starved' for RAM compared to many PCs, but I think that even today we still have a plenty of PCs with only 8GB RAM, which makes the consoles comparable with PCs.
The consoles GPUs are not the fastest, but that is more a matter of 'eye-candy' than game-play mechanics. We already have a lot of graphical options on PC and they could (and probably does), just use lower settings than 'Ultra' on PC.
The next BF-title will probably not be developed for PS4/XBOX one which would be a limiting factor (and perhaps already was in 2042). But BFV ran on older consoles and had way more destruction than 2042.

I understand what you're saying about being able to play with friends across platforms and like said before I'm not opposed to having a cross-play option in theory but in practice it just seems to torque-off almost everybody. Maybe if they could get the net-code figured out it might work, I don't know.
You may be onto something with them trying to make this game backwards compatible to older consoles, I hope they focus on the newer consoles and mid to high-end PCs going forward.

@Ironhead841 even as a huge proponent of crossplay I do wonder if there isn't additional server latency added because you've got PSN and XBL users leaving their closed networks to play with PC in the wild internet. I'm not a network engineer so I have no idea but I do wonder. Any in modern gaming everybody is generally torqued off regardless ;-)
