'Specailist' And The Possible Rework
To preface here: I, personally do not care for the 'specialist' or 'hero' characters in this game. It does not suit the whole Battlefield premise, at all.
In fact, I think a majority of people who have played battlefield in the past, and present, don't either. I understand the direction that Dice went under for this, but it was the wrong direction to take. Even more so that people found them annoying to the point that they removed the end game quips from them. Good start.
I understand why they are there; to make more money off cosmetics, to appease EA.
Now, I am not here to just bring up a glaring issue, without a offering of a solution. That would just be complaining.
The interesting, but tedious fix:
Look, I've been playing battlefield since Battlefield 2. I've enjoyed most, if not all titles even with rocky and undesirable launches and issues. And from game to game, the topic of Grunt Customization has always came up in discussion since Bad Company with friends and randoms I've met. So let's start there.
1. Drop the 'Hero/Specialist' altogether, and REPLACE it with customizable 'Grunts'.
So, this idea comes with a wide range of what players like, and want. Think of games like Halo ODST for example. Play the game to unlock new looks, helmets, arm guards, ect. But instead apply it here, in a persistant online Battlefield game, which 2042 is.
This will solve some key issues with boots on the ground gameplay.
1. With 4 'classes' Assault/Support/Engineer/Recon being divided up with the next patch, easily use the BOTs in single player/co-op to draw up the class looks and feel. Like they were in BF 3 & 4, for example.
Go take a look at the bot models one time. They look pretty cool, if a little generic. But that is the point. The solution here, is to use these baseline models, and offer customization to the appearance. If not, just use these models and rework them entirely for players to use.
This would give players the ability to tie themselves to the game a bit more, and be more enthused to do a battle pass for free cosmetics, and even offer more options in the cash shop.
Give players options and ways to unlock, mainly, the new looks of body rigs, helmets, knee pads, belt items, ect to give a range of options to pick from to look a little unique but keep body uniform the same depending on the faction (US or Russian forces)
2. Speaking of the cash shop, what about already bought cosmetics?
This here would probably be the teidous fix. DICE can offer similar cosmetics, like Mackay's Scorched look on 'assault' class appearance in compensation. And universal camo skins would just have to be applied here as well.
Or possibly, offer compensation back to the players in good faith. Even if it was half of what they spent. (More to come about retaining the current 'heros')
3. So what about the 'specialist' unique gadgets, if you're going to do away with the 'specialist' in the main parts of the game?
Probably a more simple fix than most, but as we can choose our gadgets and the like, have each class an available pool of these 'specialists' gadgets.
Rocking an assault grunt? Pick between the grapple hook, ballistic shield, airburst, ect. Recon? Take the hacking tool or flying drone, or the wall hacks. You get the idea.
Keep then tied to the 'class' but be able to use them freely in your loadouts.
4. What about the hard work and voice actors used for the already in place specialists?
Keep them in game, but use them specifically for other modes that are not conquest, rush, breakthrough. Use them in portal and hazard zone specifically.
The game doesn't have a story mode to begin with, so close ties with these characters are impossible to forge other than Irish, and that's if you've played previous titles. So really, we're not at much of a loss player wise.
I know that this may be a far sighted whim of a single person, but I believe that this would give players, both new and prospectively returning ones, a reason to keep coming back. I do know that this was a main gripe, the 'specialist', at first glance with a lot of old BF heads. Not everyone, but the majority.
We just want to be nameless boots on the ground again DICE
