I hate the "hero character" approach. I also hate the sci-fi gimmick / gadget focus if I'm going to be honest.
Ideally, I would have liked basic classes as there were before but in either case, I'm with those who would rather see a more customizable approach to your own character(s). For a company that touts inclusiveness, wanting everyone to express who they are and representing those from various walks of life, I find these hero characters extremely shallow and very limiting in that regard.
IMO, if this is something they were truly passionate about, it should have been a no-brainer to include basic customizable features like skin color, hair styles, voices, gender, race, etc. Allow players to express themselves through their characters. The ability to choose all of these things assures that ALL players can be represented and better identify with their avatars in game. .....and the more connected a player feels with their in-game character, the more likely they would be willing to buy MTXs to accessorize them.
....which brings me to my next point that has been brought up by the OP and others. There should be the ability to change individual components of the player's outfits, kit, camo, etc. I would also think there would be much more opportunity for EA / DICE to profit from a model like this as they could sell individual pieces of gear, sets and so on vs. what are essentially hero character skins. As it is, I feel zero connection with these characters let alone and interest in playing dress up with them.
It really has me scratching my head as the industry realizes just how important character customization is to a lot of players. People can spend hours setting up their characters in games that support these features. There is a lot of opportunity there to cash in on its popularity. IMO, its a win-win scenario. People can create their characters the way they want and EA / DICE can make some money on offering unique items and shortcuts to grinding for others.
