@ArchAngeL-PCXyeah but why change the old system in bf4 that works perfectly. why do we need to have characters. why cant we just be us in a uniform like the other bf's. i dont like it and it seems im not alone but each to their own i guess. Ill have to wait and see it in more detail but i haven't got high hopes for that sort of gameplay.
@eqoswiftzzz You'll probably be able to change how they look. I don't care about the cosmetics anyway lol. From the PS Blog article:
"Specialists are Battlefield 2042’s different character types. Each comes with a unique Speciality and Trait. The former may take the shape of a grappling hook (for Assault types only – a quick zip to higher spots) OV-P Recon Drone (the mark of the Recon – which can be piloted or parked to pinpoint targets) or S21 Syrette Pistol (handled by Support – firing health vials at those who need them). Those nicely pair with Traits. Assault types are known for their nimbleness, whereas a Support Specialist doubles as a Combat Surgeon, capable of fully restoring a comrade’s health.
Beyond those two unique abilities, Specialists can be customised with whatever loadout you wish, giving you more freedom to create a playstyle that fits you. Battlefield 2042 will offer 10 Specialists on launch."
It looks to me like they are basically classes.
This actually reminds me more of Battlefield 2. Battlefield 2 had 7 classes:
- Sniper - sniper rifles, claymores...
- Spec Ops - carbines, c4..
- Assault - assault rifles, zip lines in special forces..
- Support - ammo, LMGs, grappling hook in special forces
- Medic - healing packs, defib, basically a healing assault class
- Anti-tank - RPGs, mines and all other anti vehicle munitions
- Engineer - repair tool and such
Basically split out the BF4 classes into more specialized set of classes. That's what this setup reminds me of. It worked very well as Battlefield 2 is still generally regarded as the best BF game by long time fans.
- 4 years ago@ArchAngeL-PCX I like the customisation of the loud out, but the abilities seem a bit weird. Seeing as in BF4 you got to choose the sort of 'abilities' by picking different tacticals and stuff. But this railroads you to pick a character and get the thing.
But my main problem is that we're playing as specific characters rather than regular dude.- 4 years ago@Warius5 Is that confirmed that its specific named characters?
- 4 years ago@ArchAngeL-PCX yes go to the website and go down to specialists. they have names etc

I just want to play a generic class, if if we're going to choose a "combat role" like in BF5 let us do that from the menu not make a separate "hero" with a back story to play. I loathed the Elites in BF5 and never once used them despite having them all via the latest Steam version of the game.
- 4 years ago@ArchAngeL-PCX Not at all. Looks like i can equip a sniper on any specialist, that's also what Jackfrags said in his last video.
- 4 years ago@xVanjaZ Yeah that tracks with what the Playstation Blog says:

it's just the two traits making them unique.- 4 years ago@ArchAngeL-PCX True, but having unique specialists and placing 128 people does not make them unique anymore. It kills the feeling of "Just a soldier on the battlefield"...

The issue for me isn't the added build freedom on a weapons end but the fact that if I want o be a medic I can't model it after myself I have to be Maria... Or Boris for support. Why the rigidity there?
- 4 years ago@WinterbornGuard exactly

Optically this is kind of a huge problem... its like the plot of a made for tv sci fi "Battlefield 2042 - Ten individuals are mysteriously teleported to a future battleground where they must battle copies of themselves to survive in order to find their way home.."
- 4 years ago@WinterbornGuard Yeah I don't get it either. I don't personally care about modeling my character. Even in games that force character creation, I tend to be pretty standard. It's all about the gameplay for me.
At the same time, I don't want to play as a forced personality. I imagine there is more than just appearance for these characters like voice lines, accents, maybe even emotes or executions. Battlefield is not the game I'm looking for that in.- 4 years ago

I really hope this is something they back out on or tweak towards more generic and less personality for specialists.

As with every change it can be devastating, but consider what advantages it offers compared to the strict roles and associated guns in battlefield 5.
It seems that there's also a major concern, that every class basically can use all weapons. Consider that Battlefield 4 already went that route to an extent and it worked out flawlessly in the end. Medics where far more viable on the battlefield and where actually able to contribute in longer range battles with dmr's. Changing you're role to actually contribute to gunfights was not necessary. In Battlefield 5 long range engagements always lead to a lack of medics on the field because the medic weapons where mostly smgs.
People don't have to switch their role in battlefield 2042 in oder to play the gun they want to play. I think it can offer far more open playstyles and also more possibilities to work together in a squad. It will empower squad play. This goes well in line with the new squad focused vehicle setup and the new higher player count.
Also we still know way too low information about the new system to already judge it. Will we be able to pickup dead soldiers guns instead of kits now? What about attachments they carry or the kit? Ammunition?
I think it's amazing and will just allow so much freedom in the way we play the game.

@striker891 No BF4 did not do that. They had DMRs , shotguns, and Carbines as all class while the rest of the weapons and gadgets were class locked. DMRs being all class was a hotly contested change from BF3 in the forums not only due to rampant DMR spam but now all classes didn't have access to SMGs. In BF3 the all class weapons were SMGs and shotguns so every class had a ranged and CQC weapon in their arsenal which was frankly nicely balanced and much better than any system since.

I honestly don't get the distinction? In BF4 you chose from 4 classes each with its own set of specialisms and character model. Admittedly the characters didn't have names but when you chose a class you selected your character at the same time? If there were only four choices in BF2042 and they didn't have names would you be happier? I honestly don't understand.

The specialists remind me of rainbow 6 siege operators, and the thing that bothers me is that they are actual characters. I always prefered the idea of running around as a nameless, unique soldier without a distinguishable personality or backstory. I don't want to see the same character running around the battlefield on both teams, I just want a customizable soldier.

I'm open to the idea of specialists, and having them named with a backstory doesn't phase me (my headcanon for all games is I/my gaming alter ego takes control and thus, is that character anyway).
Most reservations should be hammered out once we can actually test these characters out on the field
