Not a good idea because semi auto weapons tend to have a sweet spot for rate of fire and accuracy (or button spam). Spam too much and your accuracy is affected, be too slow on the button bash and you lose rate of fire. If it was made 'auto' then this would be like hitting the sweet spot every time and therefor making the weapon characteristics pointless.

That's what will happens. You will still to have switch your fire style you can't just spam.

But isn't that what your auto fire option does, auto spamming the trigger?
- @kregora short answer, yes. It would have it's benefits and but also it's negative effects. It's not perfect but an option.
