I don't think it's been abandoned quite yet. In fact we just got some news today about Season 1 and the game economy.
They abandoned this game in December. The original Season 1 content was broken down into 4 seasons to ensure they didn't have to develop any additional content. Outside of bug fixes and cosmetic changes (maps and Specialists), this is going to be the same game in a year. 4 new maps, 4 new specialists, a few new weapons, gadgets and vehicles. The bare minimum.
This game economy is as basic as it gets. Free Tier and Paid Tier, synched to ensure the free tier gets all the actual content with the paid tier while the paid tier get extra skins and XP boosts. Whoop De Do. Where is the Server Browser? Squad Management functionality? Platoons? Basic legacy features AWOL from this game and since that would be "new" development, we won't see it in this title.
