Xbox player here. I've had this in numerous games, not just battlefield. Melee is either on a stick that gets nudged when trying to ADS, or as in my case my hands are just oafish sometimes. Remapping your controller might help. I use a Kontrol Freak attachment on my controller sticks now and it seems to help, at least most of the time.
you need a lighter touch on the controller if you are using the "push stick to get knife out". i have to push and hold stick to deploy knife and if you are using a controller you do to unless you have changed your mapping

Yea, I am on PS5 and have never had this happen before.
And I have played BF since 1942 and every BF game since then and have NEVER had this happen before.

Only time I can remember this happening to me is when I'm being too heavy-thumbed with the right stick. Usually a panic reaction when someone jumps me and I'm quickly trying to aim at them.

It's most likely this, to be honest.
There is no such thing as an auto melee in BF2042.
