IMO, BF1 nailed 'atmosphere' the most. Can't speak for AOW but I reckon we'll see some crazy good Portal lobbies if/when progression is fixed

@TTZ_Dipsy you're spot on. Portal is the answer to so many issues with AOW but DICE intentionally curtailing XP in Portal is really kneecapping Portal and the Community's willingness to play it. That and the fact that good portal servers are transitory so you can't save a good server to your favorites and return to it whenever you want to play.

I agree with both. Some may think it strange but the only reason I bought BF2042 was for Portal.
I've likely have a decade or two on some of you but I've been a BF fan for a long time. Dabbled a bit in 1942 but loved BF Vietnam, BF2, BF2142 (surprised me) and really dug BF3. Hardline as "meh" and not what I wanted from the franchise. Neither was BF1 but that was more about a disinterest in the WW1 theme. It was still enjoyable for a little while though.
I wasn't even crazy about BF4 and the return to yet another ww2 shooter with BFV turned me off completely. .....not to mention the drama that was stirred up which (if I'm going to be honest) turned me off completely when it became a peeing match between the devs and trolls stirring the pot. I just wanted a good game with the BF formula I remembered. ....not all the whacky stuff.
When BF2042 was revealed, it was obvious they went all in on elements I hate and changed / removed those I felt defined the series. They kept brining up their focus on those crazy "Battlefield moments" in past games and wanted to make a title that would embrace that. The trouble is (IMO) is that reason those "BF moments" were special to some was due to the fact that they didn't necessarily happen that often and weren't things that all people could easily replicate. I really love certain foods like chocolate ice cream but I cant eat it it all the time otherwise I would quickly grow tired of it. For me, there is a point where you can overdo such things otherwise they are no longer special. ....no longer those "moments" people will remember so fondly.
I wrote off BF042 after the reveal but then Portal was announced and they had me hooked. I read and watched everything I could get my hands on and when it came time for release, I bought the game specifically for that mode and haven't regretted it since.
Yeah, I'm miffed about the progression but the good news (for me at least) is that it's really only tied to the BF2042 content. ....I'm more interested in the legacy assets at the moment. The good news is that Justin (from Ripple Effect) has been keeping fans up to date with things on Twitter and he last said that the current state of progression is still a work in progress. I'm hopeful we will see a return of progression on all unlocks for the BF2042 content in the Portal custom game modes at some point.
