Two things that are abstracting this game to almost passive spectator level are:
1. No scoreboard
2. 128 players (meaning YOUR contribution is watered down and futile... play well or don't play well - outcome has barely anything to do with you for 128 player matches) 64 was pushing it in the past but "ok". 128 players was the worst decision they made and had a knock on effect to every other bad decision (inc bad maps, not enough vehicles and poss even no scoreboard)
So now when we play we have to 'accept' we are NOT going to feel the same sense of involvement or worthiness as past BF's (my personal fave being BF4), instead we're just there for a shallow ride... LUCKY even if in 20 mins of match time we even get 5 mins of contribution/worth/fun, because we spend most of the time sat at outposts doing nothing, OR walking for miles to get somewhere OR (once we reach that point) get one kill then get killed by the masses of enemies (because of 128 players). It's woefully imbalanced, totally unuanced and cheap feeling... even among the small glimpses of old style BF 'fun', it's so spread out that the majority of time playing feels like wasting your life. I never felt that before in BF, in BF4 I've played 8 years (played last night in fact again after 2042), 1000+ hours, rank 140, all leveled up and it STILL feels visceral and worth my time. 2042 just half a week in feels... kinda pointless.
last gen consoles are getting the better gameplay experience right now cos of 64 player limits (but sadly are stuck on the empty maps)
I hope they put it 64 player servers, map choice , map rotation instead of disbanding after each match (look how good portal feels by comparison to stick with the same guys you just met and continue playing - that is addictive - but not without its flaws carrying over from the main game design choices).
A scoreboard, for better or worse was one of the main reasons to even TRY to play well.. not just K/D (i rarely cared about that - not at all in conquest only in TDM) but capping points often got me top of the board so I felt it was worthwhile running around, it was addictive... here, even that pleasure is cancelled out... I can cap 20 times and at the end I'll get "throwables thrown: 2"... and NO mention of the points (or 'xp') I got from actually all that hard strategical work. WHAT A WASTE OF TIME.
It's just another in modern society's concession to dumbing down, shallowness... like mainstream music, trash TV, and MTX focussed games... all for the kids to transition through with their mom's credit card and no thought about making a worthwhile/lasting game.
O.K the weird thing is I can see within 2042 there are definitely parts of it where someone/some team/1 of the studios did TRY to deliver something special, as much as I love BF4 I admit somethings feel immediately better in 2042 (the weight of the game, the gunplay - not the bloom, the graphics, the immersion/atmosphere... even some of the slicker ways of getting into matches with less hassle - though ultimately less choice which gets boring). But it's like one team or set of devs did really well on many things, graphically I think for example breakaway on discarded 'feels' really nice and looks beautiful, far better than anything in BF4 technically, but the gameplay and chaos of 128 players and overall map layout make it far less replayable.
Something was at odds at DICE this time around, I hope they can correct it back to the greater parts and cut out the poor parts in future patches.
