things that would need to happen inorder for BF42 too live longer.
firstly, the game needs to reward skill not chance, how would this happen? simple firstly you would need to reduce the amount of anti-vehicles in the game. "how do you do this with out breaking the blance of the game?" you may be wondering its simple.
* remove the specialists and add back classes and set a cap of one type of class per sqaud
this would reduce the amount of anit-vehicles in the game making vehicles more of a threat while also you now made a role for each person to fill, medic would have the role of protecting their teammates and or helping them do their jobs with out being the man that does it him self, xp should be rewarded based on how much your helping them ( either by how many people you saved by picking them up or how much healing you do how much ammo you give things of the sort) assault should be the front line attacker they should be rewarded more xp to more you kill other players and how much you push points. recon should be the role you hang back and spot targets for your team ( witch brings me to the point for recon class you should replace pinging with spotting) and you should get more xp for how many targets you spot or how far away a kill might be or how importent a target was at a time things of that sort. lastly engineer should be the role of anti vehicles their job should be the countering of vehicles you get more xp for how ever many vehicles you destory.
next i would think you would have to nerf any weapon that is easy to use and buff the weapons that are harder, for an exp i'll use the jet in BF42 the jets guns deal very tinny amounts of damage and are inaccurate due too the spread of the weapon so simple fix buff the damage on the weapon increase the travel speed of the rounds fired and make the cannons pin point accurate this thing should be abble to rip apart an attack heli in under 0.5 seccounds but he draw back should be its hard to aim you should have to learn and get better with the jet to make it good, but the lock on IR/AA missles should be nerfed to only deal 15-20% of an attack helis health, as its easy to use and doesnt take much effort/skill to use. this change would give the jets a much bigger and better role as they would be ANTI air, lazzer guided missles shouldnt be a weapon that can kill tanks but more assist in killing them instead of 60-80% of a tanks health with one or two rockets it should be 20-30% this change would make it so that the jet can turn the tieds of battle in the favor of who ever is attacking it but the jet alone shouldnt have that power because its simply not its role to play. things of this sort would make each vehicle have a reason to be in the battlefield and a role too play in it.
next weapons should be looked at the same way, weapons shouldnt be about picking the best one in the game to win, each weapon should suit a persons playestyle no bad weapons as it were, each weapon should be different but not worse or better then another, for an exp the 20mm sniper shouldnt be abble to be fired unless prone and you have to set it up to use it as well as un-setting it to move again, allowing the user to be spoted and shot at easyly but for the gain of one shot kills as well as a powerfull weapon for anti-vehicles, but other snipers such as the DXR should only have great bullet travel speed as well as low bullet drop but low damage long reload, the weapon should force head shots but the take away is its easyer to use. and the starting sniper should be good damage but meh everything else. nothing should be easy to use and hold a massive impact on the game.
maps should be reworked so that theres less open areas too allow for shot guns to have a reason to be in the game, as well as its more fun to move around the map then.
vehicles shouldnt be tied to a class of vehicles each one should be its own class ( this is to fix when you want to use a jet but someone takes the attack heli so your now unabble to use said jet.) the ticket system for vehicles should be based on the mode playing for conquest it should be each new objective caped gives 10 tickets to your team now the weaker the vehicle the less it takes jeeps hovercrafts and low arrmor vehicles like the nightbird should be 1-2 then up from there should be 3-5 then lastly 5-10. this would make people wanna play the objectives more as it would reward your team with more vehicles, each time you spawn in a vehicle either by the drop down option or the overscreen it should place a timmer after the vehicle is destoryed of 5 mins, preventing players from spaming vehicles also to allow more people to use vehicles.
thats just for the core gameplay but for the rest ALOT of bugs need to be worked on as such.
