It would NOT be in Portal, but in the main menu, replacing the current CQ button (so, everyone plays that way and there would be no split of the player base).
Even IF there were anyone that would -- for some inexplicable reason -- prefer MM over persistent servers, there would be ZERO difference for their experience (except they would have to quit if they wanted to stop playing except exit from the main menu).
Remember when they featured Rush there? They can just replace the button that now starts the MM for CQ and instead perform MM to place you on a persistent, official Portal server with full XP.
And I agree, this is just a preliminary solution, but given that it takes no effort on their end, the only explanation they are NOT doing it is that they do not WANT TO.
PS: Now that I think of it, it does not have to be preliminary. It can be the permanent solution but of course they would have to add a server browser to not only be able to join those servers via MM but also by searching for such an official CQ server while filtering for ping/map and number of players on server. And because they already HAVE a server browser for Portal, I guess even this part wouldn't require an excessive amount of work.

That puts a different slant on things I would definitely vote for that as a very good alternative to what we currently have.
DICE why don't you trial this asap, then after we have used it for a period of time we could judge whether it is acceptable as a permanent solution or not.
Good thinking Mate, nice one. !!

LOL -- thanks! You are free to repost this proposal until we either get this implemented or an official statement, why they opt not to do it.
You can even claim this as you own proposal -- as long as we get this implemented soon. 😉 - RayD_O14 years agoHero

One very important question, will this proposed method help the poor guys who currently can't get into matches. ?

Only if these official servers would show up in the Portal server browser as well (or they start to provide a separate server browser instance for the official game modes). I guess, the former is a small change and just a flag to toggle on the backend to ensure they are not hidden, but I am not 100% sure about how they have implemented that (maybe the official Rush servers were visible in the server browser, but I never checked).
The reason why they are currently stuck in the 'Waiting for player' loop is because of the restrictions in place for match making that prevents them from being put in servers outside their region. If nobody play the game in their region, this would not help them (but also not make matters worse) of course. - RayD_O14 years agoHero

I am sure it is something they could quickly find a solution to the region issue.
It really is something I feel strongly about so I would really want DICE to do whatever it takes to ensure all players can get into matches.
As you know we have been campaigning daily for the removal of MM so any replacement would ultimately have to work for all players.
Hopefully your suggestion coupled with a few tweaks by DICE will be possible in the near future. 🙂

If DICE can find a way of implementing your suggestion that allows players to find matches outside their region, then it could definitely act as a good stop gap, especially if it's something they could implement very quickly.
In the meantime I plan to continue to push daily for a permanent solution on the usual four threads.
I just want to make sure that we don't abandon the players who currently can't even get into matches.
