I think all changes were unnecessary and had no positive impact on the game whatsoever. All it did was minimize choice, while it cemented the hierarchies between the different specialists. There are specialists that are absolutely worthless to the average gameplay, mainly Boris and Crawford, whose weaknesses you can now not alleviate due to limited gadget choice.
With the goal to reduce min/maxing, you actually elevated it, since you made it clearer that for doing the shooting part of this game, you can only play certain specialists. If you played Assault before, you are now even better, because you can do everything, while everyone else is more limited. Anyone moving to another specialist because of the class system is now minmaxing but might not have been doing so before.
I played Falck with M5 and prox grenade. This was the logical choice, because my squad runs the M5 as well, which gave all of us a decent chance at killing a vehicle we encounter. With that gone, we all now play what is best for us first and naturally we do not engage vehicles at all now. I am using the Claymore now to squeeze some extra kills out of the kit. So I have no maximized my personal gain, when before I had two gadgets equipped that would elevate me and others.
Personally, think that there was nothing special about the specialist 'free for all' Universal soldier ethos of the the game and there simply was zero teamwork beyond the horde. Classes even pseudo class structure is a better step for a 'Battlefield' game imo.
But what this game will never recover from is the lack of content i.e Maps. 4 per year is simply atrocious
Dam it's not even 12 months 4 maps in 14 🤨

It's not a real battlefield game without classes.

this wasn't a class update. this was a lock gadgets update. if weapons aren't locked they aren't classes

I agree if it were really a return to classes then they should have removed specialists' and their "abilities" and locked gadgets and weapons into traditional class roles.
Basically, rebuild the whole game from scratch, which would of course be idiotic and not really feasible or financially prudent.
