Vehicle balancing for breakthrough?

Right now vehicles in breakthrough are heavily unbalanced and playing against them is highly unfun and unrewarding. So I decided to write down a few points on why I think this is the case and what I would suggest changing.

  1. Boring engineer specialists
It doesn't take one engineer to destroy a vehicle, it takes several, which is a problem when almost no one plays as them. In most games there are like 4/32 engineers:
    - boris: his sentry almost never kills anyone and when it does it's a big surprise.
    - Lis: her rocket is guided and very slow. So you're an easy target for anyone as long as you're not far from the battlefront. Helicopters can evade very easily and ground vehicles can shoot them down.
    - Craford: His Vulcan is very popular with snipers and other engineers with the rocket launcher because it's a very easy kill.

So when you choose which engineer to play as it's Sophia's choice.

  2. Unbalanced supply
To fully replenish the tank's health and ammo, you only need to wait a few seconds.
To replenish all of the engineer's missiles you have to die. Why? Because no one is throwing Ammo create. Most of the time, you can find max one on the battlefield and it will refill one rocket and then you have to wait a long time for the same box to refill another ammo.
Why doesn't anybody throw an Ammo create? Because there's no need. If you're an engineer with an AK-24 for example, and you equip Standart (155), Drum (100), Armor 84 so you have 339 rounds total, which along with the fact that the corpses leave ammo behind means you'll never need to replenish ammo. If you're Assault you have a total of 650 rounds.
The only time you'll see ammo is when the game goes into a conquest mode, like Exposure last point, where all people do is try to use as much explosive stuff as possible.

What if the tank had to go to a station to replenish ammo and health like in BFV?
Ammo restrictions for characters, you only have the option of 2x ammo types, where you have 3x magazines for the primary and one for the secondary. Which would hopefully monivate people to throw more Ammo Create.

  3. Bunker position
Want to make an indestructible bunker? You need a LATV4 with a 30mm or 50mm cannon and an Irish with an APS-36 Shootdown Sentinel. Drive to a spot preferably near a rock in your protected zone, turn the vehicle with its back to the enemy and place the Shootdown Sentinel around it. Now no one without a vehicle can kill you. The missile will disable the Sentinel and the sniper can't see your head without having to go into your protected zone. If you want to see this in action join Breakthrough Exposure. Since the Sentinel can also destroy C5s you would have to destroy the Sentinels first and then destroy the vehicle, which is almost impossible and still a suicide mission. Alternatively, Spearhead will almost always offer the tank variant. Just hide behind a rock and he'll get tired of it.

Another nice example is EBLC-RAM hiding on the second Exposure point (I think B1) where he has Shootdown sentinels scattered around. A near indestructible position as the attacking tank can't see him.

Make LATV4 open on all sides so I can take out snipers with a sniper rifle?
Disable Sentinel deployment in the attacker's protected zone?

  4. Unusable disable
If I shoot a tank with an M5 rocket launcher, I take the following health off it:
    - From the front, about 21.
    - From the side, about 27.
    - From the back, about 34.
So I always need at least 3x missile to destroy a tank. But i doesnt matter where i hit him. He can drive away. If I could at least take out some part of it, I'd have a fighting chance. I hit the tracks, he can't go. I hit the engine, it's slow. I hit the turrets, the gun turns slowly, etc. Just like it did in the previous games.

If you manage to hit a helicopter with an M5 rocket launcher the helicopter should be more than 34 life away and maybe it should * or disable the propellers. Helicopters then act like little fortresses on Exposure and calmly fly 5 meters from the point because they know we can't destroy them and even if we hit them they just fly away.

  5. Weak tools for destroying tanks
Anti tank mine: easily visible and almost always destroyed before the vehicle approaches.
Javelin: Slow missiles that you can simply hide behind something which will work as a shield for you. For faster vehicles like EBLC-RAM you usually don't have time to aim so you miss.
AA Misle: The flare shields the vehicle long enough that it can calmly fly behind something, wait for it to recharge and fly again. Again, Exposure is a beautiful example of helicopters hiding behind a cliff.
C5: You have to get all the way to him which if he's even an average player you won't be able to do. If you try to hide your approach behind the smoke it will simply drive away.
M5: Probably the only usable weapon in my opinion.

  6. RAO
But someone will point out that you can just take the RAO specialist and knock out the flares or Active protection system.
If I said engineers are scarce in games I'd take the RAO Specialist to be a unicorn. The only time you'll see him is when he's tasked with hacking things.

What is the core of Battlefield?

I would say Battlefield moments. The moments so crazy, that you want them posted on youtube for every one to see.

Battlefield 2042 is killer of these moments: Exposure last point. I am defender. Enemy MAV go into tunnel. Lots of infantry there. So i throw both my smokes. I ran to MAV. Around me there is like 5 enemy soldiers but nobody is shooting on me. I throw 3x C5. Somebody spotted me and started shooting. In last moment i detonate C5. Nothing happend. When my dead body is laying there MAV moves and i see there is Shootdown sentines.

Battlefiled moment is not getting killed by camped out tank, or LATV4 from great distance, or by helicopter from orbit.

  • @Nell_CZ Good post, but I dont think DICE cares enough about these fundamental balance issues. They never said a word on them (especially not about the ammo problem) in their poshy PR-podcasts.
