Well, I am German and we get everything translated as far as television is concerned. But we (most of us) can still speak English (I for one have to speak English at work all day as half of my colleagues are not from Germany but from many other different countries). This is not true for everyone, but for many or even most gamers I guess this holds true.
You might have to deal with some accents of course, but for the purpose of video game communication, even an average German's English is 'good enough' I'd say. 😉

@DuaneDibbley I think that in nordic/western European countries English is usable, but in other parts of europe it can be a problem.
Being a tourist in southern Europe can be 'difficult' if you do not speak their native language (just a little at least).
