What does Battlefield mean to me?
First I must say that Battlefield started becoming something different (feeling different to me) when BF4 was released. Now, don't get me wrong, I would take BF4 over BF2042 any day of the week but it felt like a step back from BF3. ....a step more in the direction of CoD but still with a BF flavor.
BF1 was actually not bad although I just wasn't intrigued by the WW1 theme to be honest. BFV was a complete let down both in the Hollywood direction which was portrayed by the reveal trailer, the bionic-looking character, etc. but mainly in the subsequent PR disaster by EA / DICE concentrating on a small minority and turning that on anyone with criticism of the game in regard to authenticity, etc. The "if you don't like it, don't buy it" remark really got under my skin so I didn't. ....the first Battlefield game I didn't buy since I started with BF Vietnam.
As for BF2042, I only bought this game for Portal and the BF3, BC2 and 1942 assets to create Experiences for my friends and I to enjoy. IMO, BF2042 is the furthest from the BF formula I have felt thus far. I was already set to pass on the game and wouldn't even be here now, in this forum had it not bee for Portal.
Having said that, without listing all of the things like the traditional classes and so on that have been repeated ad nauseum in this forum and elsewhere when people speak of that "Battlefield formula" (which I tend to agree with btw), I will just say that games in the series like BF2, BC1&2 and BF3 really capture the essence of what BF means to me. Those are what represent what Battlefield is to me. ......so, since most responding here have played one or more of these titles, I think it should be obvious what is different when compared to BF2042. If it's not, then it's really not worth me trying to convince them otherwise.
Now it just boils down to a matter of whether you like those differences or not. Unlike some, I'm not going to insult those who have a difference of opinion from mine on the subject but put me in the camp that is firmly against nearly all of them.
In a nutshell...... What is Battlefield to me, personally? BF2, BC2 and BF3 with a sprinkling of BF Vietnam and even BF2142. If you've played one or more of them then you should understand. If not, that's fine but it doesn't change how I feel on the topic.
