Why always either 64 or 128 players, and not some number between?

I have a question I would like to get a good answer to. Whenever there is a discussion about the suitable number of players on AOW breakthrough and conquest, people always talk about either 64 or 128 players. This may come as a surprise to most people, but there actually exists numbers between 64 and 128, so I wonder why nobody talks about these other mystical numbers? For different maps there maybe different number of players that is suitable. I myself think that 128 players on Flashpoint conquest is to much, but I'm not sure if 64 players is optimal either. Maybe the best number suitable is 96, or 84 for that matter? And in Flashpoint breakthrough, maybe 48 could be better for all I know? I can't for the love of god understand why these numbers can't be tweaked more in this regard on the different maps. It should be an easy thing to do, and it may well make some maps and modes play better than they do now. This also goes for other modes like TDM, I think some maps are to big for 16 vs 16, Flashpoint is one example. A few more players would maybe play better?
Are there anyone else thinking the same thing?
