@filthy_vegans DMRs are meant to bridge the gap between assault rifles and snipers. The Russian SVD Dragunov is actually a very good example (it isn't a sniper) where one soldier in each section was supposed to carry it to support those carrying AK47s. The AK47 had iron sights and was not the most accurate of weapons at range, the SVD was supposed to give accurate fire out further (note that the come with a 4x scope as standard). Nato forces have started using DMRs because the 5.56 round does not have the same effectiveness at range as the older 7.62, so as with the Russian SVD, DMRs give that option.
Now the problem, in 2042 weapons have been brought to a more COD like state. Sniper rifles start to drop off at 150m making users vulnerable to assault rifles (and of course assault rifles don't have scope glint), but at least they have a chance to drop someone quickly. DMRs in 2042 drop off even quicker and lack the stopping power of a sniper rifle, which allows someone with an assault rifle of SMG to close and hose, or simply go semi auto and laser fire with minimal recoil (the game mechanics give lower recoil to an assault rifle than a DMR because 'balance'). If they extended the range of effective engagements (which would make sense on the big maps) rather than having tight clumps of action and huge empty spaces, then a DMR would make sense.
Honestly, they feel fairly useless overall.
SMG's, AR's, and LMG's are all equally if not more effective at mid-range where the marksman rifles are supposed to shine while still retaining far superior short range power.
Honestly, the only one that seems to have any value is the SVK since it can fairly consistently 2-shot enemies with high powered ammo...though lose most of your mag size.
I've been playing with the AC-42 a lot more recently, especially single shot, and I genuinely don't see a reason to use a marksman rifle over it ever again. It doesn't quite have the same damage at range, but it remains stupidly accurate even when firing quickly. With the bonus of it still being more effective at shorter range engagements.
VCAR I don't get as a weapon in this game in the slightest. I honestly haven't the foggiest clue what niche it fills that isn't filled better by multiple other weapons.

This is part of the motivation for my OP - I've T1ed the AC-42, the M5A3 and several SMGs. My KPM with the K30 is easily more than double that of any DMR because it doesn't suck sweaty ballsacks.
With regard to DMRs, I feel that they should probably behave a lot closer to how the assault semi-autos behave in BFV. Properly handled, they can control medium-range engagements but don't dominate at short range, and are competitive with the hard-hitting but still requiring some competence semi-autos like the ZH-29.
