Why do DMRs exist?

I've been playing a while now, and have got to Tier 1 with several SMGs and assault rifles. I've tried using the DMRs on several occasions, but I just can't find a convincing use case for them.

They are obviously outperformed at close range by both SMGs and ARs. Arguably SMGs are comparable at medium range - I know I'd prefer the K30 for most 30-50m encounters - and an assault rifle in single fire seems to be a much better choice - they basically have no recoil in that mode. At longer range, by the time the recoil on, say the VCAR, has settled, any half-decent sniper will have landed their shot.

Am I missing something?

    Think also both of those decent DMRs were the first in the game to be drastically nerfed right away in first release after beta play?  Reason why they today now are completely neutered and essentially meaningless, as the fully auto weapons at same time maintained and some even boosted in their range and damage levels.

    The weapons' and also vehicle balances in this game has still a lot of work left to be done, because currently it is bad in so many ways.
